The Office of the Attorney General is seeking qualified candidates for Detective Investigator Trainee positions located
in the Major Investigations Unit (NYC), within the Investigations Division. Candidates should be hard-working, self-
motivated, and committed to public service on behalf of the people of the State of New York.
Under the direct supervision of the Detective Supervisor of the Major Investigations Unit, the Detective Investigators
work collaboratively in case-specific investigative teams with Assistant Attorneys General, analysts, and forensic
auditors to conduct highly complex criminal and civil investigations, using the highest level of professionalism,
judgment, and discretion.
Successful candidates will combine traditional investigative experience and skills with strong communication and
interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Either a two (2) year or four (4) year college degree or current New York State Police Officer Certification.
- Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License with the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- The NYS Public Officer’s Law requires that all police officers be citizens of the United States of America and reside
- Candidates should possess strong writing, analytical and organizational skills. Candidates will be required to
combine traditional investigative skills with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of an
investigative team.
- The ability to successfully complete all requirements to obtain NYS basic police academy certification or have
candidates will need to pass a physical fitness exam based on the Cooper Standard.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Cultural competence to understand and effectively respond to cultural differences for involvement in undercover
- Strong communications, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Proficiency with computers, common word processing applications, use of search engines and internet research.
- The ability to read, write, speak and understand a second language, in addition to English.
The annual salary for this position is $63,435 (before police academy graduation) and $75,348 (after graduation). Appointments
in New York City receive an additional $3,400 location pay. This position is overtime eligible. Performance of the duties
may require frequent, unscheduled work on evenings and weekends and requires 24/7 availability. This position
is in the exempt class, and incumbents serve at the pleasure of the Attorney General.
