Duties

Under the supervision of the Regional Maintenance Supervisor, the candidate will be assigned to perform work primarily in the trade of carpentry and as assigned for special projects. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform all aspects of carpentry from framing to finish work, repair of historic buildings and building new structures from blueprints.
  • Craft and assemble wooden structures, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Read and interpret blueprints.
  • Measure and cut materials.
  • Install and repair wooden components and ensuring the quality and safety of the finished products.
  • Perform other semi-skilled trade work and repairs as assigned.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, measuring and testing instruments appropriate for the crafts that are assigned.
  • Follow building codes and regulations.
  • Supervise and train seasonal and lower-level employees.
  • Perform other semi-skilled trade work and repairs as assigned.
  • Work effectively in a team setting and demonstrate flexibility in tasks and schedules.
  • Follow instructions, including written direction, accurately and efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner under stressful conditions.
  • Although the work is periodically inspected by the supervisor, the incumbents are expected to work with considerable independence as is typical of a journey level craftsperson.
  • Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of full-time experience** in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, OR equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

  • Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
  • If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

OPERATING NEEDS:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
  • Possession of a Class A, B, or C commercial driver’s license may be required for some positions. If required, this position will be subject to the provisions of the OTETA Act (1991), see below.***
  • Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and have knowledge of good safety practices that must be utilized.
  • Must have experience in the design, construction, finishing, and repair of furniture.
  • Must have the ability to read blueprints and project plans as well as supply rough sketches for work to be performed.
  • Must have a working knowledge of modern code compliance.
  • Must have the ability to operate and maintain various types of woodworking equipment to ensure accurate and safe operation and use the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the tools required.
  • Must have a working knowledge of various forms of finish applications and the proper techniques and safety protocols for varnishes, stains, etc.
  • Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The candidate is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug, and alcohol testing.

The hiring rate listed combines the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($48,956) with the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400). Similarly, the job rate posted is a combination of the statutory job rate ($59,757) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400).
