Duties Description

Under the supervision of a Recreational Complex Manager or higher-level park management, the Water Safety Supervisor 2 is assigned to the Aquatics Complex, coordinates, implements, evaluates, and supervises aquatics programming, water safety programming and pool operations at Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park.

• Works closely with Aquatics Management to develop lifeguards and coordinate the state lifeguard exam.
• Coordinating and/or teaching learn to swim programs,
• Supervision and assignment of seasonal lifeguards, Water Safety and Instruction Assistants and lower-level Water Safety and Instruction Supervisors,
• Scheduling of water safety staff coverage and complex coverage as needed, assisting with staff recruitment and testing programs,
• Presenting and coordinating in-service training for all staff,
• Reviewing and assuring staff familiarity with all agency and facility safety policies and procedures regarding pool operations,
• Performing facility inspections including staff and public use areas for cleanliness and safety,
• Supervising physical training and conditioning activities of water safety staff,
• Providing recommendations for equipment needs,
• Performing equipment inventories,
• Protecting swimming areas,
• Must be able to conduct tests for turbidity, residual chlorine, and PH levels.
• Work closely with volunteers, the community, and vendors to assure NYS Parks’ mission is always met.
• Perform administrative duties as assigned for overall operational support like preparing and checking sign-in sheets and seasonal payroll.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of one year of experience as a lifeguard is required. At least six months of that experience must have been in a supervisory capacity. Additionally, candidates must possess and maintain current certifications in the following American Red Cross programs or their equivalents: Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid (if not included as part of the certification for lifeguarding). The Water Safety & Instruction Supervisor 2 must also obtain during the probationary period (if they do not already possess the certifications at the time of hire) and maintain instructor ratings in First Aid, CPR/AED and Lifeguarding as well as a Water Safety Instructor certification. Candidates must pass a practical test of CPR and water skills. If a conditional offer of employment is made, the candidate must submit medical documentation to assure that the candidate is physically able to perform the duties of the position.

• Incumbent must obtain certification as a Water Safety Instructor within the probationary period and maintain the certification throughout the term of employment.
• Incumbent must also pass a practical test of CPR and water skills.
• Daytime, weekend, holiday, and evening work may be required.
• Incumbent may also be required to work at other sites within the NYC Region as needed.
• Supervise and provide instruction for water safety staff assigned to teach Learn to Swim Program
• Teach Learn to Swim Classes for Seniors, Adults, Children, and other programs as assigned.
• Assist with the development of and present orientation training programs to ensure subordinate staff is familiar with various park operations, rules and regulations, employee handbooks, water safety manual, reporting procedures.
• Supervise on-the-job lifeguard physical training and conditioning, drill and training programs and perform unannounced spot inspections to ensure programs, training and drills are conducted accordingly as well as to ensure that lifeguard staffing is adequate and well trained.
• Assist with the evaluation and recommendation for water safety equipment needs, prepare purchase requisitions according to specifications and procedures, maintain equipment inventory and ensure control and security of all equipment.
• Personally inspect as well as supervise the inspection of all water related areas and equipment and take immediate corrective action in order to ensure maximum patron and employee safety as well as compliance with various internal and external guidelines and mandates.
• Gather information and prepare various statistical, narrative, and special reports as mandated by Admin.
