Job Summary
NYT is seeking a Part-Time Job Coach as part of the Employment Training Program (ETP) for a 19-year-old student in a Western Suffolk County School district. This is an excellent opportunity for a clinician or special education teacher to apply their expertise and skills in a fulfilling, innovative way!
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Job Coach to provide support and guidance to a 19-year-old student with Autism in a work-based learning environment. The Job Coach will assist the student in acquiring essential job skills, navigating the workplace, and building independence. This position requires a patient, empathetic approach, the ability to adapt to individual needs, and a commitment to empowering the student in their transition from school to the workforce. High Functioning, personable student with nice/supportive family!
This role is very part-time and has fixed days/hours: Alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:45 to 9:45.
Key Responsibilities:
Job Skills Development: Support student in learning specific job-related tasks and skills through hands-on training, breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps, and providing feedback as needed.
Workplace Adaptation: Assist the student in adjusting to the work environment, understanding workplace norms and expectations, and practicing social communication skills.
Task Support: Guide the student in completing job tasks, ensuring they understand how to perform them correctly and efficiently.
Workplace Communication: Coach the student on how to interact appropriately with coworkers, supervisors, and customers. Encourage development of professional communication skills, including requesting help, asking questions, and maintaining appropriate workplace behavior.
Behavioral Support: Implement strategies to address challenges such as anxiety, sensory overload, or frustration in the workplace. Offer emotional support and coping strategies when needed.
Monitoring Progress: Track the student’s progress, providing regular feedback to the student, their family, and school staff to ensure they are meeting their goals. Adjust strategies as necessary to improve outcomes.
Goal Setting: Collaborate with student, family, and educational team to develop and review individual goals, ensuring the student’s personal strengths and interests are taken into account.
Safety and Well-being: Ensure the safety of the student in the workplace, maintaining awareness of their needs and helping to create an environment that accommodates sensory sensitivities and other specific requirements related to autism.
Community Integration: Support the student in building social connections within the work setting and the broader community to increase their confidence and ability to function independently.
Completion of required paperwork (as per OPWDD).
Qualifications/Key Attributes:
- Master's or bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy, education, special education, psychology, social work, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Previous experience working with individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of autism spectrum disorders, social communication challenges, and behavioral strategies.
- Strong communication skills
- Patience, empathy, and flexibility in adapting to the needs of the student.
- Ability to maintain a positive and encouraging attitude while helping the student navigate challenges.
- A valid driver’s license (if applicable for transportation purposes)
