The SUNY Orange Newburgh Lab School provides care for children from 18 months to Pre-Kindergarten. We provide high quality, affordable and accessible child care to the children of Orange County Community College students, employees and the community. The Newburgh Lab School also serves as an exemplary teacher training site for students in the Early Childhood Education Department.
Reports to: Lab School Center Liaison and Education Coordinator
Salary Range: Starting wage $15.50/ hour, NON-NEGOTIABLE
Education Required: Associates Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or related field OR CDA certificate OR a high school diploma (or GED) and some experience working with young children in a licensed child care facility OR Substantial experience working with young children. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprints check, as well as submission of a physical examination and TB test by a medical professional.
Description of Position: (Includes but not limited to)
The Assistant Teacher will assist the Head Teacher in daily activities, maintaining an orderly learning environment, implementation of appropriate discipline policies and procedures, and housekeeping tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities to include but not limited to:
- Assist the teacher in the daily learning of activities, based on appropriate principles of child development, in accordance with the philosophy of the school.
- Assist in maintaining an orderly learning environment in the classroom.
- Assist with the daily living activities of the children such as serving meals and snacks and assisting children who need help toileting.
- Assist with the implementation of appropriate discipline policies and procedures for all children.
- Assist with record keeping pertaining to the children’s progress and development.
- Supervision of the classroom when the teacher is out of the room.
- Help with general housekeeping tasks.
- Attend all staff and in-service meetings.
- Meet and maintain mandated training requirements as stipulated by the NYS OCFS relevant to current position.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with children, staff and families.
- Effectively establish and maintain working relationship with supervising personnel, coworkers, all college employees and the public.
Preferred Skills:
Experience working in a classroom environment.
Working Conditions:
- Must be physically able to care for children and move about the classroom freely. Infrequent lifting or carrying objects/children up to 50 lbs and infrequent travel between buildings on campus is required for this position.
- Ability to manage multiple projects.
- Lab Schools hours are 730am-530pm. Closing shifts are required for this position.
