Job Position Description:
KRDO13 is seeking an Assistant News Director to oversee all aspects of the day-to-day operation of our winning news department. The Assistant News Director will be an out- front leader who will drive daily content and coverage decisions. Breaking and developing news and weather on all platforms will be a primary focus. We want an energetic leader who wants to get the “scoop” and lead the news cycle in the market each day. We are not a press release station. The Assistant News Director must be a seasoned journalist who can work with reporters on story development throughout the day and who can also be a “big picture” thinker to work with the EP and producers to make our coverage standout. The Assistant News Director must have prior experience and a strong interest in investigative journalism. This position requires a decisive leader who can manage multiple projects and high-pressure situations with composure. The Assistant News Director will always have a deep understanding of leading by example. The successful candidate will also embrace coaching, mentoring and inspiring staff of all levels. The Assistant News Director will work closely with the News Director and management team to lead a newsroom that prioritizes work culture and winning each day.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee broadcast and digital day-to-day content, news operations and news staff.
- Manage reporting staff on story pitches, story development and script approvals each day.
- Ensure breaking and developing news gets into newscasts and on digital platforms.
- Ensure accuracy in all newscasts and digital platforms.
- Oversee all newscasts with “big picture” thinking to ensure they are urgent, engaging and compelling.
- Manage investigative content and reporters.
- Work closely with the News Director to conduct regular one-on-one feedback meetings with reporters and other news staff.
- Work closely with the Assignment Manager on coverage decisions and short- and long-range content planning.
- Work with the News Director to coach and mentor the news management team.
- Lead on election coverage and other special projects.
- Work closely with the News Director on promotable content and planning.
- Help lead editorial meetings.
- Take an active role in recruiting and hiring.
- Lead the newsroom with confidence in the absence of the News Director.
Required Qualifications:
- 8 years previous broadcast newsroom experience with at least 3 years of leadership responsibility.
- Prior experience in a content generating role.
- Prior investigative journalism experience.
- Sound news judgement and solid understanding of legal liabilities and ethics.
- Ability to manage high pressure situations and maintain composure.
- Must possess strong “people skills,” high emotional intelligence and a solutions-oriented approach.
- Must be able to be on call 24/7 to respond to staff inquiries and newsroom needs.
- Must be willing to occasionally adjust schedule on short notice to work weekends, evenings and mornings based on coverage needs.

Annual Salary Range:
$80,000 to $90,000; based on experience. Exempt.
