What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Nurse position at Newton Country Day School?
The School Nurse will provide support and services to students, faculty, and staff, promoting the health and well-being of the school community. The nurse will work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, and administrators to address medical needs, manage health policies, and remain current with local and state health regulations. This position requires a compassionate professional to foster a safe and supportive student environment.
Key Responsibilities
Health Services
- Provide direct nursing care to students for injuries, illnesses, and emergencies.
- Administer medications according to physician orders and parental consent.
- Develop individualized health care plans (IHPs) for students with chronic conditions or special health needs.
- Maintain accurate, confidential health records in compliance with state regulations and school policies.
Health Education
- Educate students and staff on preventative health practices.
- Collaborate with the Health and Wellness Team to develop, implement, and teach health programs.
Safety and Emergency Preparedness
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies and coordinate care with external emergency services when necessary.
- Oversee the maintenance and distribution of first-aid supplies and equipment.
- In partnership with the Athletic Department, conduct training sessions for staff on first aid, CPR, and other relevant topics.
Compliance
- Ensure compliance with state and local health regulations, immunization requirements, and communicable disease management.
- Develop and update school health policies and procedures.
- Serve as the liaison between the school and local public health agencies.
Collaborative Role
- Participate in student support meetings to address individual health-related needs.
- Attend faculty meetings, assemblies, and special student-related activities.
- Advise school leadership on health trends and recommend strategies for health improvement within the school community.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Current registered nurse (RN) license in the state.
- Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in pediatric or school nursing.
- Experience working with children and adolescents.
