Position Summary: The Senior Staff Accountant will be responsible for managing all aspects of financial reporting and bookkeeping functions, ensuring the accuracy of financial data, and supporting the company’s financial objectives. This role blends the traditional responsibilities of a bookkeeper and staff accountant with more senior-level accounting duties, such as financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Bookkeeping and Transaction Management:
- Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries.
- Record all financial transactions in accounting software, ensuring accurate and timely data entry.
- Reconcile bank statements, credit cards, and other accounts monthly.
- Maintain and organize financial records, invoices, receipts, and documentation.
- Process payroll, including tax withholdings, benefits deductions, and other adjustments.
2. General Accounting Functions:
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheets, profit & loss statements, cash flow statements).
- Assist in the preparation of tax filings and liaise with external auditors or tax professionals as necessary.
- Monitor and review expense reports and ensure adherence to company policies.
- Manage fixed asset register and depreciation schedules.
3. Senior-Level Accounting Responsibilities:
- Lead month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely completion and reporting.
- Perform financial analysis to provide insight into business performance, trends, and opportunities for cost savings.
- Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and financial models to support strategic decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and other relevant accounting standards.
- Analyze variances between actuals and budgets, investigate discrepancies, and make recommendations for corrective action.
- Support senior management with ad hoc financial reporting, analysis, and projects as needed.
4. Compliance and Process Improvement:
- Ensure accurate and timely filing of all regulatory financial reports, including taxes, payroll, and other statutory filings.
- Assist in developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls.
- Continuously improve processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
- Assist with external audits, providing documentation and information as requested.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA preferred.
- 5 years of accounting experience, with a mix of bookkeeping and senior-level accounting responsibilities.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero) and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience with payroll systems and financial forecasting tools is a plus.
