Fiber Engineering Specialist
Hybrid Work Environment: Work from home on Monday and Friday; in-office Tuesday through Thursday
Key Skills/Knowledge:
- OSPI/GIS Telecom Experience (5 years)
- Understanding of ISP/OPS Telecom Drawings and familiarity with OTDR and Power Meter Shots
- Additional: Experience in developing Power BI reports
Required Technology Experience:
- OSPI/GIS Telecom Experience
- Telecom Design Tools: QGIS, OSPI, 3GIS, ARC MAP, etc.
- OTDR and Power Meter Shots
Job Description:
The Fiber Engineering Specialist is responsible for designing and allocating fiber routes and map creation. This includes designing fiber routes for customer-funded and company-funded projects, such as backbone, lateral, and riser fiber.
Responsibilities:
- Kick-Off Meetings: Attend meetings when new backbone, lateral, or riser fiber is required.
- Fiber Route Design: Design backbone fiber routes utilizing GIS tools (QGIS, OSPI, 3GIS, ARC MAP, etc.).
- Cost Requests: Complete Cost Requests from Sales Engineering with firm splicing costs based on the existing network.
- Circuit Identifiers: Obtain or create necessary circuit identifiers.
- Fiber Design Maps: Create fiber design maps from A-Z for fiber locations.
- Splicing Prints and Work Orders: Design fiber routes and generate splicing prints and work orders for vendors.
- Fiber Assignments: Provide assignments to the Construction Team for lateral fibers to the last demarcation panel.
- Requisitions and Purchase Orders: Create requisitions for vendor payment and Purchase Order approval.
- Change Management: Submit change management notifications and adhere to policies and guidelines for field activity.
- Closeout Tasks: Provide Operations/Provisioning with final DLRs and test shots for closeout, and close out tasks in the appropriate system(s).
- Vendor Invoices: Approve vendor invoices for the project.
- Collaboration: Work with Fiber Construction Managers on expansion and overbuild projects.
- Capacity Planning: Review capacity reports and plan network augments for high-utilization fiber routes.
- Emergency Response: Participate in On-Call rotation for emergency and trouble response.
- Collaboration with NOC: Work closely with NOC, Field Operations, and Change Management teams to restore fiber impairments.
Education/Certifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2-year technical degree or equivalent work experience
- Preferred: BS/BA in Civil, Construction, or Electrical Engineering or related field
- A valid driver's license is required
