Summary : The body shop supervisor oversees the daily operations of a body shop, managing a team of technicians to ensure efficient and high-quality vehicle repairs are completed within established timeframes and quality standards while also maintaining customer satisfaction by coordinating with other departments and adhering to manufacturer guidelines; key responsibilities include assigning repair work, monitoring progress, quality control, staff training, and ensuring proper use of equipment and parts.

Key responsibilities : Team Management : o Lead and supervise a team of body shop technicians, including assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing feedback. o Train and develop technicians on new repair techniques and safety procedures.

Address performance issues and provide coaching as needed.

Repair Operations : o Review repair estimates and ensure accurate diagnosis of vehicle damage. o Schedule repair jobs and prioritize work based on urgency and customer needs.

Monitor repair progress and ensure adherence to quality standards and manufacturer specifications.

Quality Control : o Perform quality inspections on completed repairs to ensure customer satisfaction. o Identify and address any quality issues promptly.

Maintain accurate documentation of repairs and parts used.

Customer Service : o Communicate repair status updates to customers and address concerns. o Coordinate with the service advisor to ensure smooth customer interaction.

Resolve customer complaints related to repairs in a professional manner.

Inventory Management : o Order necessary parts and supplies to support repair operations

Coordinate parts purchases through the parts department.

Shop Maintenance : o Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the shop

Oversee maintenance of equipment and tools to ensure proper functioning.

Required Skills and Qualifications :

  • Technical Expertise : Strong understanding of automotive body repair techniques, including frame straightening, panel replacement, and paint procedures.
  • Leadership Skills : Ability to motivate and manage a team effectively.
  • Communication Skills : Excellent verbal and written communication to interact with customers, technicians, and other departments.
  • Problem-Solving Skills : Ability to diagnose complex repair issues and find efficient solutions.
  • Quality Focus : Commitment to maintaining high standards of workmanship
  • Computer skills : Ability to work with Mitchell, Assist, Fusion for estimating, and tracking repairs and communicating with the service and parts department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Relevant Experience :

  • Several years of experience as an automotive body technician
  • Prior supervisory experience in a body shop setting.
  • Physical Demands : The Auto Body Shop work is physically demanding and requires a combination of strength, dexterity, and endurance. Here are some of the key physical demands associated with auto body jobs : Strength and Stamina :

  • Lifting and Carrying : Able to lift and carry heavy tools, parts, and equipment, such as body panels, welding equipment, and sanders. This can require significant upper body and core strength. Must regularly be capable of lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Standing and Bending : The job involves standing for long periods, often in awkward positions, and bending or crouching to access different parts of a vehicle.
  • Manual Dexterity : Precision Work- Tasks like sanding, painting, and detailing require fine motor skills and a steady hand. Tool Handling : Using hand tools, power tools, and spray guns demands good hand-eye coordination and control.
  • Repetitive Motions : Sanding and Polishing involve repetitive arm and hand movements, which can lead to strain or fatigue over time. Welding and cutting also require repetitive motions and precision.
  • Exposure to Chemicals and Dust. Paint and Solvents : Exposed to paints, solvents, and other chemicals, which can be harmful if proper safety precautions are not taken. Dust and Particles : Sanding and cutting can produce dust and particles that may be inhaled, requiring the use of protective equipment like masks and respirators.
  • Working in Confined Spaces : Vehicle Interiors repairing or detailing vehicle interiors may require working in tight or confined spaces, which can be physically uncomfortable. Under Vehicles : Some repairs may require working underneath vehicles, often in cramped conditions.
  • Noise and Vibration : Power Tools- Power tools generate noise and vibration, which can be taxing over time and may require hearing protection. Impact Tools- Tools like pneumatic hammers and grinders produce significant vibration, affecting hands and arms.
  • Environmental Conditions : Temperature Extremes : The Auto Body shops can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter, especially if they are not climate-controlled. Outdoor Work—Some tasks may require working outdoors, exposing technicians to weather conditions.
  • Visual Demands : Detail-Oriented Work : Auto body repair often requires close attention to detail, such as matching paint colors or aligning body panels, which can be visually demanding. Eye Strain- Working in low-light conditions or focusing on small details for extended periods can cause eye strain.
  • Physical Risk : Injuries- The job carries a risk of cuts, burns, and other injuries from tools, sharp metal edges, and hot surfaces. Heavy Lifting- Improper lifting techniques can lead to back injuries or strains.
  • Mobility and Flexibility : Reaching and Stretching—Drivers often need to reach, stretch, or twist to access different parts of a vehicle, requiring good flexibility and mobility.
  • Safety Measures : To mitigate these physical demands, auto body technicians often use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, respirators, and safety glasses. Proper training in ergonomics and safe work practices is also essential to reduce the risk of injury and fatigue.
