Literacy Manager

 The Literacy Manager will be responsible for planning, communication, curriculum support, classroom observations, and program development for NIA’s literacy initiatives, including the Ready/Rising Readers programs through ExpandED Schools. The Literacy Manager will work with multiple school locations to ensure programing meets goals and expectations. Programing will provide students with hands-on activities, and is designed to build vocabulary and language skills, enhance reading comprehension, and critical thinking skills. The Literacy Manager must be available to attend occasional trainings and should be prepared to turn-key information and provide coaching and guidance to after-school staff. The Literacy Manager will provide support related to literacy enrichment, as needed, across NIA’s after-school programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Visit assigned schools on a regular schedule; participate in planning meetings, review schedules and lesson plans, observe activities and provide feedback, coaching, and recommendations to staff
  • Review lesson plans and work with teachers and NIA staff to ensure engaging, successful implementation of literacy lessons 
  • Serve as liaison between the school and NIA, working collaboratively to meet the diverse needs of students within the school
  • Serve as a resource for instructors, group leaders, teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, and administrators
  • Communicate expectations and requirements related to project goals, desired outcomes, design, professional development, timeline, and assessment
  • Work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data related to literacy development among students
  • Facilitate regular meetings to review progress at participating schools and after-school programs and share best practices
  • Collaborate with NIA’s Evaluation & Capacity Building Specialist to provide professional development opportunities in literacy instruction, differentiated instructional support, and facilitating inquiry 
  • Guide teachers to collect and analyze data and develop action plans in response to determined student needs
  • Focus on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning
  • Develop and maintain a master calendar that includes training, observations and coaching visits, and project benchmarks
  • Attend on-going professional development throughout the year, and utilize training information to coach and guide staff in program implementation
  • Lead other literacy-based initiatives for NIA, including family read-aloud events.
  • Participate in efforts to further develop and fundraise for literacy programming.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least three years of teaching or related experience in the education field required; Master’s Degree a plus
  • Expertise in childhood literacy, thorough understanding of NY State ELA standards, and experience with literacy instruction in the classroom
  • Experience supporting partnerships between schools and community based organizations, especially with elementary school aged children 
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to execute tasks efficiently
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills especially in speech and writing abilities
  • Experience to collect, analyze, organize data and interpret for desired outcomes
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to handle complexity and change
  • Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to share research-based instructional approaches with teachers and staff, provide advice and coaching to frontline staff.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan to visit schools and attend meetings

 

This is a full-time position with a starting annual salary of $58,500
