What are the responsibilities and job description for the Child Protection Case Manager position at Nicollet County?
The purpose of this Child Protection Case Manager position is to work with children and their families to provide social work services for the protection, rehabilitation, and care of children.
The courts are involved in some cases, not in others; this position is responsible for case management in both situations. All work is done in accordance with Minnesota statutes regarding juvenile safety and placement, the reporting of maltreatment of minors, as well as Minnesota administrative rules regarding social services for children.

Promotes safety, permanency and well-being of children who have been maltreated by offering services to prevent future maltreatment, safeguard and enhance child welfare and support family life. Provides case management and coordination of care to families experiencing child maltreatment. Monitors and evaluates client progress and appropriateness of services provided to families. Provides reasonable or active efforts to maintain or reunify families affected by child maltreatment. Collaborates with community partners including law enforcement, correctional agencies, attorneys, therapists, medical providers, chemical dependency services, housing services, domestic violence services, employment services, school, residential treatment providers to improve family functioning and child safety. | Daily 20% | C4 |
Provides case management services to families with child protection needs related to mental health, runaway, truancy, minor parent or general child welfare issues. | Daily 20% | C4 |
Provides initial response to reports of child maltreatment. Screens reports to determine the type of response required. Interviews children and adults to assess safety and risk within families in accordance with MN Statute 260E. Determines what the needs are of individuals and families for services. Provides after hours response for emergency and urgent child protection situations. Additionally provides general intake and emergency on-call social services as assigned. | Weekly 5% | C4 |
Identifies, selects, coordinates and monitors out of home placement for children experiencing maltreatment. Acts as legal guardian/custodian for children in foster care or state wards. Supervise visitation between parents and their children in foster care. Travels to see foster children wherever they are placed on monthly basis. Interprets Federal law, Minnesota Statute & Rule as well as agency and DHS policies for children and families involved with child protective services. Minimum Qualifications
- A valid driver’s license; and
- A bachelor’s degree in one of the behavioral sciences (including but not limited to social work, psychology, sociology, human services, family services, or community corrections).
Preferred Qualification
- A minimum of 2,000 hours of experience delivering social services to children and families, which can include volunteer time.
