What are the responsibilities and job description for the Process Engineer - Technical and Quality position at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co.?
This position in Nippon Dynawave Packaging reports to the Technical and Quality Assurance Manager to introduce the successful candidate to our customers, processes and culture at NDP. The successful candidate will become proficient in basic Process Engineering practices. Projects will include claims investigations, process troubleshooting, statistical analysis of control limits, and technical assistance to others throughout the mill.

Key Functions:
- Analysis, planning, and control of the manufacturing process for the production, reliability, optimization and continued improvement of pulp and paper products.
- Develop plans and lead efforts to achieve safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations.
- Build capability of operating team to monitor, track and achieve performance metrics.
- Function as technical lead for product development, trials, and chemical hazard management.
- Support operators through technical training and development.
- Support area process planning and execution for planned maintenance outages and the annual plant shutdowns.
- Participate with leadership team providing input to goals, focus areas, and initiatives.
- Monitor and maintain test equipment.
- Customer interface and issue resolution.
- Evaluation of chemicals and processes for continuous improvement and cost reduction.
- Development of software programs to streamline mill monitoring and reporting.
- Assist the mill in various technical services; functions as the “go to” technical resource.
- The position is a mix of office work, computer work and field work.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Pulp and Paper Technology or at least four years equivalent experience.
- Internship or work experience in the Pulp and Paper Industry desirable.
- Practical understanding of statistical process control and application.
- Strong computer proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to work with operators, management, suppliers, and customers.
- Strong oral and written communication, team building and technical skills.
- Ability to work extended hours and off shifts to meet operational needs.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
- Must be able to work independently and handle multiple projects.
- Must have strong problem-solving skills.

About Nippon Dynawave Packaging in Longview, WA
The Longview Liquid Packaging facility produces bleached paperboard used to make cartons and cups for liquids such as milk, juice, coffee, and sake. The facility employs about 500 people and produces 260,000 metric tons of paperboard each year – the equivalent of 6 billion liter-sized milk cartons. Weyerhaeuser launched the Longview Liquid Packaging business in 1953 and operated the facility until its acquisition by Nippon Paper Industries (NPI).
The facility began a new era under NPI ownership on September 1, 2016, operating as Nippon Dynawave Packaging. As a long-time customer of Longview’s liquid packaging board, NPI brings a new level of understanding and commitment to the Liquid Packaging business, which bodes well for the future strength and success of the Longview facility.
