What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Education Teacher - Functional Skills (Grades 7-12) position at Nixa Public Schools?
Primary Tasks & Major Activities
Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEP). Provide direct, specialized instruction for students in assigned subject areas and grade levels. Perform student individualized assessment and interpretation. Attend/participate in appropriate and relevant meetings and staffings to include before school, after school, and/or evening activities. Initiate and complete required paperwork within established timelines. Collaborate with appropriate staff/individuals regarding student programming and services. Must be a team player and active participant of a Professional Learning Community (PLC). Train, supervise, and evaluate paraprofessional staff assigned within the classroom. Provide Individualized and small group instruction in a variety of settings. Strengths in data collection and analysis, strong behavior management skills, and expertise to teach ELA, math, social/emotional and executive functioning skills within a team environment. Administer MAP/EOC/MAP-A assessments. Knowledge of and support the building level and district policies.
Educational/Skills/Experience Required
Current Missouri certification in K-12 Special Education, cross categorical or its equivalent. Experience with teaching functional/life skills is preferred. Knowledge and expertise in working with the various eligibility categories. Prefer previous experience in a school environment with training in behavior management, executive functioning skills, and social/emotional supports. Knowledge of appropriate grade level and functional curriculum associated with the assigned position. Competent technical skills and personal time management. Regular attendance and positive interpersonal relationships with staff, parents, students, and community. Knowledge of requirements and previous experience with MAP/EOC/MAP-A assessments is preferred. Willingness to be trained in and follow appropriate use of seclusion, isolation, and restraint procedures. Willingness to understand and support the District's Comprehensive School Improvement Plan. Must successfully pass a background check and drug test that are satisfactory to the Board of Education.
