Job Description

The NMS Shareholder Apprentice Program is designed to provide motivated Shareholder candidates the unique opportunity to receive on-the-job training within the Anchorage-based HSE department for a period of 24 months, and upon successful completion of the program will be prepared to step into regular full-time employment as a fully qualified safety technician. This position is the first step on a safety career path, which can lead to management positions.

This position supports the objectives of the HSE department by providing support to the department units (Safety, Training, Worker’s Comp) as described in the essential duties and responsibilities. The apprentice will learn how to perform all of the essential duties of the Safety Technician, listed below, and any other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Safety

The Safety Technician Apprentice will provide support to the Safety Specialists in the execution of their duties in providing service to the operating units of NMS in the following areas.

Inspections & Evaluations

Under the supervision of a Safety Specialist, the Safety Technician Apprentice will

  • Perform unit inspections and evaluations.
  • Generate comprehensive and accurate reports.
  • Recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform follow-up evaluations and inspections as required.

Incident Case Management

  • Review initial incident reports for completeness: all required fields populated and necessary documentation and attachments are included.
  • Follow up with reporting person if more information is necessary.
  • Support the safety specialist in the investigation process, gathering information, documenting steps in the SMS, and interviewing witnesses/employees.
  • Participate in analyzing root causes and suggesting corrective actions.
  • Provide input into the incident report and participate in the incident review meeting.
  • Complete any follow action items in the SMS, including assigning corrective actions and following up on their implementation.

Hazard Recognition

  • Perform hazard assessments on tasks, identifying the appropriate hazard controls and energy sources, and provide guidance on mitigation measures, including the appropriate PPE for the hazard.
  • Evaluate near miss and good catch reports for quality, recommend corrective actions if needed, and follow up on implementation.
  • Compile quarterly report on quality near misses and identify best practices to share.
  • Manage the hazard recognition contest, awards and winner notifications.

Hazard Communication

  • Maintain the SMS database of chemical inventory, adding and removing chemicals at the direction of the safety manager.
  • Audit and distribute unit specific SDS binder information, including posters & QR codes, flash drives, etc.
  • Create and distribute secondary container labels for approved chemicals as requested.

Safety Communication

  • Draft safety bulletins and alerts, distributing them to employees as directed.
  • Provide content to the marketing & communications team for the employee newsletter.
  • Draft quarterly communication from hazard recognition program, communicating best practices across the company.
  • Participate in and conduct safety meetings as directed.

SMS Administration

  • Assist in troubleshooting user issues such as password resets and form instructions.
  • Create, schedule & run reports.
  • Orient managers to the system’s use and capabilities
  • Create guides & tutorials for system actions.

Workers Compensation

The Safety Technician Apprentice will provide support to the Workers Compensation Manager in the execution of their duties in providing service to the operating units of NMS in the following areas.

Case Management

  • Understand the regulations on reporting work-related illness and injury.
  • Assist the worker’s compensation manager in gathering documentation and information necessary to file the claim and record it in the SMS.
  • Accompany employees with work related injuries or illnesses to medical appointments, ensuring necessary documentation is completed.

Return to Work

  • Monitor the non-occupational call list for eligibility to return to work.
  • Ensure necessary documentation to return to work for non-occupational cases are received by the WC manager.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation to return to work has been received and entered in to the SMS for work-related cases.
  • Schedule return to work fit-for-duty appointments.

Training

The Safety Technician Apprentice will provide support to the Training & Development Manager in the execution of their duties in providing service to the operating units of NMS in the following areas.

LMS Administration

  • Create and update work locations.
  • Manage course assignments, updates and publishing processes.
  • Create and run training reports.
  • Assist in troubleshooting user issues such as course completion, records uploading and password resets.
  • User administration and reporting for 3 rd party LMSs (e.g. ASA, Ingenium).
  • Create guides and tutorials for LMS actions.

New Hire Orientation

  • Provide support to managers in ensuring new hire training information is reported.
  • Facilitate in person training of initially required new hire courses as needed.
  • Manage the HQ online training area near reception and provide all necessary support to employees coming in to complete online training.

Job Competency

  • Create, review, update and distribute work procedures under the guidance of the training manager.
  • Assist managers in implementing job competency reviews and recordkeeping.

Qualifications

  • Must be a shareholder of NANA Regional Corporation, Inc.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.
  • One (1) year experience in an office or technical environment preferred.
  • Computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • OSHA 30 Hour Certification preferred.

Description of environment: Standard office environment

Physical requirements: Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Employee may travel up to 25% to various locations within the U.S. and/or remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs. Travel is coordinated by NMS.

Time management, critical thinking, interpersonal skills, communication skills,planning and organizational skills including the ability to work independently, prioritize activities, meet commitments, and proactively manage time and a heavy workload. Ability to conduct training session in a one-on-one and group setting.
