GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Youth Care Worker is responsible for maintaining a healthy and safe environment for the children in his/her care. The Youth Care Worker develops a nurturing relationship and uses various therapeutic and socio-recreational activities in guiding adolescents and helping them learn the competencies needed to lead responsible and fulfilling lives. The Youth Care Worker serves as a healthy role model, using established therapeutic techniques, while concentrating on behavior management and behavior change. With proper attention being paid to individual needs and differences among adolescents, the Youth Care Worker promotes social growth and development. He/She demonstrates professional competency with proper utilization of supervision and consultation with other professionals.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Support and supervise UC in the execution of their daily activity plans.
- Support residents’ educational plans and progress.
- Provide access to medical care (i.e. basic first aid, arranging appointments, transporting to medical facilities, assessing need and transport).
- Promotes a positive, communicative environment with all client providers and assists clients in maintaining appropriate contact.
- Assist in implementing of plans for cultural and recreational activities, mentoring opportunities, and community connections.
II. Maintain a safe, harm-free environment for all UC as follows:
- Assure fire prevention measures are followed.
- Document and report all incidents of risky or unsafe resident behavior (i.e. substance abuse, SIB, etc.)
- Foster positive resident behaviors by modeling and teaching constructive communication and conflict resolution.
III. Transport residents to; medical appointments, recreational activities, and bus and train terminals. Accompany residents on trips for reunification.
IV. Communicate with foster parents, coworkers, and external professionals (e.g., ORR) in a professional and timely manner.
V. Completes the daily log and recreation note.
VI. Attend staff meeting and participates in Agency training programs as assigned by the Program Director.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Youth Care Worker is required to have a minimum of two years of childcare experience and a high school diploma. They have the experience, characteristics, temperament and background that enables them to be able to provide care, management, nurturance, and a safe and structured environment for the adolescents in the program. In selecting staff, NCSS strives to address issues of cultural and linguistic competency, and Spanish speaking ability is a hiring requirement.
The Youth Care Worker is required to be able to operate a personal computer with proficiency in the use of Microsoft 365, web-based platforms, and Adobe PDF. Must pass a national background check conducted by fingerprints, a state police background check, a CT DCF protective service background check, a motor vehicle check, and provide proof of physical and negative PPD results. If the applicant has resided in another state in the last 5 years background checks must be conducted and passed in those states as well. In addition, the POSITION will need to undergo an enhanced background check through the Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) after hire. A successful determination of suitability is required to continue in this position.
