The Noatum Logistics Import Supervisor leads their team in daily freight forwarding operations including, but not limited to customer service, shipment tracking, document handling, and regulatory compliance. The import supervisor plans and schedules appropriate services to maintain an effective balance between customer satisfaction and shipment costs. The import supervisor develops a thorough understanding of our clients’ shipping requirements and patterns; demonstrates sound customer service and data entry skills; and develops job related knowledge to support growth within current position and further career development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise transportation and logistics solution services and activities for the import department.
  • Supervise direct staff. Foster a participative work environment. Serve as mentor and role model for department personnel. Complete performance reviews for assigned staff, ensuring timely and accurate performance feedback is received on an on-going basis. Facilitate development and training activities for assigned staff, encouraging continuous learning and performance improvement. Interview and hire candidates to maintain appropriate staffing levels. Manage the performance of the department in support of the organization.
  • Coordinate and lead team meetings, disseminating company information, objectives, and client news to the team.
  • Supervise selected key accounts based upon size and complexity of requirements.
  • Oversee, monitor, and actively manage key metrics and client margin factor, while ensuring our value proposition is being maintained. Target key accounts that need improvement and drive improvement actions. Determine carrier strategy in order to drive increased margin and minimize problems and issues with accounts.
  • Support Noatum Logistics continuous improvement efforts for internal processes and methodologies.
  • Develop and implement standard operational processes to ensure high quality services for customers. Document processes and leverage training resources to implement best practices. Perform regular evaluations of results accomplished.
  • Oversee department’s billing to clients based on established pricing while ensuring appropriate costs and profits are maintained.
  • Prepare timely shipment and department management information and reports as requested or specified per department KPIs.
  • Negotiate shipping rates and submit to manager for approval when necessary.
  • Develop and maintain successful relationships with customers, government agencies, and local vendors (e.g., airline representatives, freight forwarders, custom brokers, local pickup and delivery companies, regional trucking companies, line haul providers).
  • Ensure compliance with all government related programs specific to mode and direction of related shipments (i.e., customs, security, other import government agencies that regulate international trade).
  • Manage import needs for larger and/or more complex key accounts or manage specific specialized services for multiple customers.
  • Oversee inbound bonded movement of cargo.
  • Oversee movement of project cargo, dangerous goods, and pharmaceuticals, as well as entry of goods into free trade zone.
  • Support trade and pricing teams in determining the best shipping methods to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to import team members in support of Import Manager.
  • Act as a point of escalation for import team members and assist in resolving customer issues.
  • Collaborate with manager and other departments to design solutions to meet customer needs and challenges.
  • Develop and maintain an office atmosphere conducive to continual growth of employees.
  • Schedule and monitor personnel resources to maintain an appropriate balance between the level of service to customers and department costs.

Minimum requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years import operational experience in international transportation, preferably with an international freight forwarder.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in all facets of air and ocean imports.
  • Proficiency in developing, implementing, following, and leading import and supply chain processes, including process improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to effectively resolve customer complaints and problems and restore or maintain business.
  • Strong customer relations ability with analytical and technical skills that can be utilized to produce creative ideas and solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively and lead team members in a business environment characterized by complexity, ambiguity, and rapid change.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation, initiative, responsiveness.
  • Team-oriented and comfortable in either a team leader or member role.
  • Knowledge of state, federal and international applicable laws and regulations as they relate to primary services provided (i.e., customs, security, other import and export government agencies that regulate international trade).
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Competent math skills using units of currency, weight, volume, and distance measurements.
  • Competency in PC, spreadsheets, and database applications (including Microsoft Office Suite).

Preferred Requirements:

  • 7 years import operational experience in international transportation, preferably with an international freight forwarder.
  • 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience in developing and/or facilitating employee training.
  • Experience in negotiating and quoting rates.
  • CargoWise platform experience.
  • College degree in related field or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Foreign Trade zone (FTZ) experience.
  • Bonded warehouse experience.
  • Dangerous Goods Certification.
  • Cross-border experience.
  • Logistics project management experience.
  • Warehousing and distribution process experience.

  • Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computers, calculators, and copiers.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, handle, use hands to grasp, or feel and operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone keypad.
