Summary of Duties

Responsible for the quality, efficient, and effective delivery of patient care for the adult or geriatric patient. Responsible for compliance with established standards, practices, and regulatory requirements. Responsible for all hospital operations in the absence of the Administrator.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Directs all clinical services including nursing, rehab therapies, respiratory therapy and pharmacy services in the hospital.
  2. Maintains the Standard of Nursing Care and Standards of Nursing Practice and implements the policies and procedures of the Hospital and clinical services departments in accordance with regulatory and Joint Commission requirements. Maintains Standards of Care and Practice for all Clinical Services. Coordinates information for regulatory agency reviews.
  3. Develops short-term and long-term goals and objectives in consultation with the Administrator and consistent with the hospital’s philosophy.
  4. Plans, organizes, and directs nursing care through utilization of the nursing process to achieve the provision of quality patient care.
  5. Supervises direct nursing care through utilization of the nursing process.
  6. Develops and maintains staffing schedules. Reviews staffing patterns, census, and acuity of nursing units, and nurses’ reports to assess the appropriate number and level of personnel needed to provide quality care that will meet patient needs and budgetary control; adjusts staff to meet dynamic needs.
  7. Oversees the maintenance of the time and attendance system.
  8. Organizes and implements a structured orientation program for all new employees which assures that the employee has competencies necessary for treatment of patient populations, including age specific, bio-psycho-social, and cultural/spiritual care competencies.
  9. Recruits, supervises and develops staff by providing guidance concerning problem solving and professional development.
  10. Explains nursing interventions to health team members through direct interactions, report, and patient care conferences.
  11. Directs behaviors of staff by use of observation. Takes immediate corrective action, to include counseling and/or appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.
  12. Evaluates staff performance and effects change as necessary.
  13. Demonstrates and/or supervises procedures and treatments performed by staff and assures appropriate documentation thereof.
  14. Collects and analyzes data pertaining to employee blood borne pathogen exposure and effectiveness, safety, and proper use of any sharps (i.e. IV catheters, IV tubing, lancets, syringes, needles, butterfly phlebotomy equipment, etc.)
  15. Provides input to the corporate Director of Infection Control for surveillance consistent with the objective of the Infection Control Plan. Serves as facility liaison to infection control program.
  16. Collects, summarizes, documents, and reports infectious disease data per established policies and procedures.
  17. Coordinates facility employee health.
  18. Evaluates problems or situations related to families, patients, physicians, or other hospital departments, and helps initiate and evaluate actions taken.
  19. Participates in the Management of Information through medical record audits and assures patient and hospital record confidentiality.
  20. Assures communications (verbal, electronic and written) regarding protected health information is handled according to the facility and/or company privacy plan.
  21. Participates in the administration and control of approved budget expenditures and expense tracking.
  22. Organizes and directs Performance Improvement Committee activities and processes in coordination with physician chairman. Assesses the quality of care rendered by the Clinical Services Department and uses the results for nursing Performance Improvement Activities.
  23. Consults with pharmacists and medical staff concerning control and administration of medications.
  24. Develops, implements and timely reviews of policies and procedures that govern Clinical Services and assures dissemination of policy to staff. Investigates irregularities and policy violations and takes corrective action.
  25. Recommends and plans for personnel development and training needs through awareness of quality assurance indicators, event report investigations, staff performance, and customer complaints and feedback.
  26. Conducts facility rounds on a regular basis and initiates corrective action and follow-up to promote Quality Control and Safety Standards.
  27. Prepares, maintains, and submits reports as directed by Administrator.
  28. Coordinates the Environment of Care program in coordination with the host hospital and with appropriate follow through when problems or system failures are identified.
  29. Recommends the purchase of materials or equipment for improvement of patient care.
  30. Serves as the Facility Safety Officer as designated.
  31. Assumes other responsibilities and duties, as assigned, to meet the ongoing needs of the patient and the hospital.

Education

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, BSN, related-masters degree preferred. Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama..

Experience

Five (5) years adult care clinical experience required. Critical care experience preferred. Two (2) years management experience required.

Physical Requirements for Essential Job Functions

  1. Must be able to walk, sit, and stand intermittently throughout the workday.
  2. Must be able to work with hands and fingers throughout the workday.
  3. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately, so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
