Purpose

The Associate Dean of Academic Success and Faculty Development provides leadership in cultivating a culture of student and faculty flourishing by overseeing academic support services, wellness education, professional identity formation, coaching programs, and faculty development initiatives. Distinct from curriculum management, which remains under the purview of Academic Affairs, this role bridges Academic, Clinical, Student Affairs, and Research to ensure continuous quality improvement, early identification of student learning gaps, and timely pedagogical interventions by faculty. The Associate Dean will lead the development of learning communities organized into “Pods,” foster evidence-based coaching models, and promote resilience and growth mindset in both students and faculty. This position plays a critical role in building belonging and advancing academic and professional success across the institution. The Associate Dean will serve in an advisory capacity to the Academic and Professional Standards and Promotions Committee (SPC) but will not be a voting member in order to maintain neutrality.

Accountabilities

Departmental Leadership and Strategic Oversight

  • Directs the newly established department of Academic Success and Faculty Development
  • Develops and oversees the department’s strategic plan, annual goals, and budget
  • Supervises department leaders and staff, fostering collaboration, innovation, and accountability
  • Represents the department in cross-campus initiatives and ensures alignment with Noorda-COM’s mission and accreditation standards

Academic Success and Coaching Programs

  • Leads initiatives to support student academic success, including pre-matriculation programs, academic advising, peer tutoring, and remediation support
  • Implements and evaluates coaching programs that provide longitudinal academic and professional development support using best practices from medical education literature
  • Oversees the structure and function of academic communities composed of Pods, ensuring effective implementation and oversight by the Director of Academic Success
  • Collaborates with Assessment and Curriculum teams to identify and respond to trends in student performance data, with the goal of reducing attrition and improving board scores

Faculty Development and Resilience Programming

  • Designs and leads initiatives to promote faculty wellness, emotional intelligence, teaching effectiveness, and career growth
  • Offers training and support in coaching, feedback, growth mindset, and inclusive pedagogy
  • Coordinates workshops, learning communities, and mentorship programs for faculty professional development
  • Works closely with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Affairs to integrate faculty development with curricular goals and accreditation metrics

Integration, Collaboration, and Continuous Quality Improvement

  • Collaborates with Student Affairs, Clinical Affairs, and Research to ensure seamless support for students across all phases of their education
  • Serves on institutional committees related to student success, wellness, and academic quality
  • Analyzes outcomes related to student retention, board performance, and faculty engagement to guide iterative improvements
  • Contributes to accreditation processes by supporting data collection, documentation, and institutional self-studies

Qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • Doctoral degree (DO, MD) required

Experience:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in medical education, student support, or faculty development
  • Proven leadership in designing academic support programs and faculty development initiatives in a health professions setting
  • Experience with coaching models, learning communities, and wellness programming in medical education highly desirable

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated excellence in strategic planning, supervision, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Deep knowledge of medical education standards (COCA, NBOME), learning theory, and instructional design
  • Strong analytical skills to assess program effectiveness and drive data-informed decisions
  • Ability to cultivate a positive, inclusive environment that supports belonging, resilience, and personal and professional growth

Must be:

  • Self-confident, strong leader, skilled decision-maker with ability to lead by influence and effectively communicate with various constituencies across the college
  • Exceptional at written, oral presentation, and listening skills
  • Able to work independently yet is an effective participant in cross-functional teams
  • Self-motivated, self-disciplined, have a strong work ethic and capable of establishing priorities in an executive setting
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing priorities and effectively handle frequent interruptions
  • Innovative, resourceful, detailed oriented, with excellent follow-through skills
  • Capable of balancing multiple projects in stressful situations while meeting deadlines, achieving desired results, and maintaining positive relations while understanding the importance of confidentiality of data and information
