Purpose

The Director of Academic Success supports the strategic goals of the Department of Academic Success and Faculty Development under the direction of the Associate Dean. This position is responsible for operationalizing initiatives that enhance student academic achievement, retention, and engagement through evidence-based strategies, targeted academic support, and comprehensive tutoring programs. The Director works closely with learning specialists, peer tutors, faculty, and staff to implement initiatives that support student learning and success, aligned with the broader mission of Noorda-COM.

Accountabilities

Academic Success Program Operations

  • Executes daily operations of the Office of Academic Success in alignment with the strategic direction set by the Associate Dean of Academic Success and Faculty Development
  • Assists in budget planning and monitors the department’s fiscal resources in compliance with institutional policies
  • Maintains personnel records and coordinates departmental documentation
  • Supervises and mentors Educational Learning Specialists and Peer Tutors, supporting their professional development and ensuring high-quality academic support services

Student Support and Retention

  • Supports the development and delivery of academic workshops, tutoring programs, and academic success courses including pre-matriculation and Professional IdentityFormation courses
  • Maintains and applies knowledge of adult learning theories, growth mindset, and academic coaching models
  • Identifies and supports students who are at risk academically, referring them to appropriate personnel and services
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to ensure appropriate academic interventions and services are in place

COMLEX-USA Level 1 and 2 Support

  • Implements the board preparation plan as directed by the Associate Dean and in close collaboration with the Department of Academic Affairs and Clinical Affairs, including Level 1 practice exams, study tools, and certification processes
  • Maintains student tracking data for board preparation milestones and communicates updates to students and other departments
  • Coordinates Clinical Integration assessments, grade submissions, and manages portals and certifications for COMLEX and NBME exams

Tutoring Program Oversight

  • Leads the design and implementation of the peer tutoring program, including recruitment, training, and oversight of peer tutors
  • Tracks utilization, outcomes, and fiscal expenditures associated with tutoring services
  • Maintains accurate records, resources, and communication for tutoring services

Academic Coaching & Community Pods

  • Implements the Academic Communities and Coaching program as directed, assigning coaches and students, tracking participation, and analyzing outcomes
  • Coordinates upper-class mentorship assignments for incoming students
  • Oversees logistics for Pod assignments, scheduling, and supplies

Compliance and Committee Involvement

  • Develop and tracks Academic Success Plans and student performance monitoring protocols
  • Maintains records and communication for academic standing actions, including compliance with SPC/SAC contract requirements

Collaboration and Communication

  • Communicates essential academic success information through newsletters, emails, and student meetings
  • Supports cross-departmental efforts with Student Affairs, Clinical Affairs, Research, and Academic Affairs in identifying and addressing student learning gaps
  • Serves on committees and supports college-wide initiatives as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s degree in education, social work, or health education related field required. Terminal doctoral degree from an accredited institution preferred,

Experience:

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience providing academic support in a related discipline
  • At least two (2) years of supervisory experience in academic support settings
  • Experience implementing student success programs in higher education
  • Familiarity with data-informed decision-making and continuous quality improvement practices

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to apply adult learning theory and learning sciences in support of health professions students
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with a capacity to lead through influence and collaboration
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Public speaking and effective written communication skills

Must be:

  • Self-confident, strong leader, and skilled decision-maker
  • Exceptional in written, oral presentation, and listening skills
  • Collaborative, with the ability to work across departments
