Full-Time and Permanent; Exempt; 7.33 Hours / Day; 220 Days / Year; 11 Months / Year
To provide effective academic instruction in an acute care psychiatric hospital setting. Work is performed under the general supervision of Principal, Mental Health Hospital Education Program and Stated Operated Program Specialist.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education.
Eligible for, or in possession of, Virginia Teachers Certification / License with appropriate endorsement(s) in health and physical education, K-12, and driver education.
Extensive standing / walking, running, sitting, lifting up to 40 pounds, repetitive hand movements (including simple grasping, pushing / pulling, fine manipulation), repetitive foot movements, bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing and reaching. The position requires extensive exposure to all types of weather conditions, including rain, sun, heat, cold.
Work involves exposure to potentially hazardous situations if safety procedures are unknown or unpracticed in conjunction with strenuous physical exertion.
Work is performed in a classroom, gym and athletic areas, requiring unusual amounts of physical skills, coordination, and dexterity.
In depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
Demonstrate considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
Knowledgeable in the use of computers and technology.
Nature of Position
Specialized teaching performed in a classroom, gymnasium, swimming pool, or on outdoor athletic / play fields.
An employee in this class is responsible for teaching health, safety and physical education and for developing in each student an understanding of the relationship of a healthy body and exercise; for motivating each student to become physically fit, develop good hygienic habits, safety skills and good social and emotional adjustment; for discovering and developing talents of students physical achievement; for developing strength and skill, agility, poise and coordination in individual, dual and team sports in accordance with each student's ability.
The teacher must attend work regularly and is responsible directly to the principal or designee.
Teaches knowledge, skills and understanding of topics included in the curriculum of health, safety, and physical education. Develops and follows approved lesson plans as directed by principal or department chairman.

Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
Works cooperatively with other health and physical education teachers and teacher assistants in planning a comprehensive program.
Analyses, demonstrates and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of games, rhythms, fundamentals of body movement as well as individual team sports.
Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, safe and productive environment in the classroom, gym or on the field, and during school-sponsored activities.
Maintains required inventory records as well as assist in the selection of supplies, equipment and instructional materials.
Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property and makes minor repairs or requests repairs to supplies and equipment as needed.
Maintains records such as attendance, grades, medical exceptions, and phone logs on a continual basis.
Provides appropriate safety instructions and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
Maintains professional competence by attending workshops, seminars and conferences provided by the district and / other professional organizations.
Evaluates each student's performance, knowledge, and skills in keeping with existing guidelines and policy.
Coaches interscholastic sports if selected to do so.
Identifies student's needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping them solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
Cooperates with school administration in providing specialty performing groups for special occasions, PTA meeting, assemblies, and interscholastic athletic events.
Attends faculty and department al meetings and participates on school committees.
Sponsors student activities assigned by the principal or designee.
