Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess an active teaching license issued by the Virginia Department of Education in the desired content area.
- Must provide a copy of most recent teaching evaluation with effective or higher ratings.
- Current administrator must complete the electronic reference form.
Nature of Position
This is specialized library management and teaching work performed in a library media center and other instructional areas within a school. An employee in this class is responsible for creating an environment whereby students and staff are effective users of ideas and information by providing intellectual and physical access to information; by providing learning experiences that encourage users to become discriminating consumers and skilled creators of information; by providing leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in the use of instructional and information technology; by providing resources and activities that contribute to lifelong learning; and by providing a facility that functions as the information center of the school. The library media specialist is responsible for the full integration of the library media program into the curriculum through establishing partnerships with the school administration and the teachers.
Examples of Duties
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Develops, translates and implements the goals and policies of the library media center.
- Makes resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school. Selects and requisitions materials and equipment.
- Provides access to the media center collection through an accurate and efficient management system.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to provide direct assistance to faculty and students in the teaching/learning process.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, administrators, parents, and community.
Hazards/Unusual Demands
- Work involves exposure to normal everyday hazards encountered in a school.
- Work is performed in a classroom and involves no unusual demands.
