The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician III to join our Columbus County Maintenance team.
In this role, you will:
- Support senior Technicians and Engineers in preparing plans, documents, estimates and contracts.
- Investigate crosslines and road conditions within an assigned section of the county and help to create our yearly Routine Maintenance Improvement Plan (RMIP), ahead of our Highway Maintenance Improvement Plan (HMIP). The plan will include replacing crosslines, lining crosslines, repairing stump holes, asphalt overlays, widening, and mill/fill repairs needed ahead of highway treatments, such as resurfacing and preservation.
- Perform onsite inspections to ensure contracts and NCDOT specifications on our roadways are in compliance.
- Communicate with contractors to schedule work, oversee that contract details are adhered to, and ensure line items and payments are correct with contractors’ invoices.
- Monitor and administer NCDOT’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Programs to ensure the facility complies within acceptable regulations and guidelines.
- Perform, track, and load safety audits for worksites and facilities into SharePoint.
- Enter, mark, and monitor 811 locates, as needed
- Measure stockpiles for inventory, calibrating salt spreaders, preparing documentation using software programs, and helping with CARS as needed.
- Assist our County Maintenance Engineer, as needed, during emergencies and bad weather.
What You Bring
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
- Computer experience, including Microsoft Office and drafting software.
- Knowledge of math functions, such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and procedures.
- Experience taking notes, collecting field data, and preparing routine reports.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
- 3 years of relevant technician experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
