Description of Work



SALARY GRADE: Flat Rated


This position is permanent, part-time, 20 hours per week.


The Office of the District Attorney, Prosecutorial District 6, seeks a qualified candidate to provide legal support services to the prosecutors in the New Hanover County office. Duties include but are not limited to the following: answer phones; assist the public; type correspondence; prepare legal documents; prepare files; assist victims and witnesses understand and prepare for court; gather information to assist in the prosecution of cases; preparing felony cases by reading case files, examining files and digital evidence for proper reports, determining sufficient evidence for prosecution, and identify areas lacking in information; and other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: court system and procedures; legal terminology; and community resources to refer victims and witnesses.

Skill in: Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; accurately typing 35-40 wpm; and answering a multi-line telephone system.

Ability to: interview to elicit information from victims and witnesses to assure appropriate services; coordinate and schedule the daily operations of the victim and witness program; manage the court appearances of victims and witnesses to ensure their presence in the courtroom when needed; communicate orally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officers, officials of related agencies and the general public; and calmly handle stressful situations.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school or high school equivalency certificate and two (2) years of legal secretarial experience.

Management Preference

At least 3 years' experience in legal, judicial, law enforcement or investigative work. Experience with computer and cellphone forensic programs is preferred.
