Company: North Carolina Legal Services
Location: Location: Fully remote with required in-person attendance on an as-needed basis for court proceedings, depositions, etc.
Preferred Start Date: Immediate
Job Type: Part-time, with opportunity to become full-time
About Us:
North Carolina Legal Services (NCLS), formerly Bull City Legal Services, is a nonprofit law firm serving individuals and families that do not qualify for free legal assistance but cannot afford the high cost of traditional law firms.
We believe in compassionate client advocacy, community engagement, and innovative solutions to legal challenges. Our workplace prioritizes integrity, accessibility, and respect for all team members and clients. By fostering a culture of support, collaboration, and professional growth, we empower our team to make a meaningful impact.
Our primary objective is to ensure that the communities we serve have access to affordable legal services. This often means taking cases on a limited basis, where free services are offered for part but not all of our clients' needs. Because of this, NCLS works diligently to develop and maintain community partnerships with a variety of nonprofit and community-driven organizations across North Carolina.
Key Responsibilities:
As an attorney with NCLS, you will serve our family law clients in a variety of case types. A majority of our cases involve:
- Child support
- Custody/Visitation
- Divorce
- Equitable Distribution
We occasionally provide service for Domestic Violence Protection Orders, name changes, or adoption assistance. This is limited to cases where we are unable to help our clients obtain free legal services through a community partner or another organization.
We have ongoing cases that you would be able to take over upon starting with NCLS, and you would have discretion around how many and which cases you work. We strongly believe that it is important to avoid burnout and maintain a positive work/life balance, not only for personal happiness but to ensure that our clients receive the best services and representation.
Qualifications:
To ensure that our clients receive excellent legal services and representation, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Bar Membership: Must be licensed to practice law in North Carolina with license currently in good standing.
- Family Law Litigation Experience: One year of litigation experience specific to family law is required. Experience as lead counsel is preferred, though experience working as co-counsel will be considered.
- Professional Skills: Strong background in negotiation, verbal and written communication is essential for success. Training and assistance are available as needed.
- Client Communication: Most of our clients have never worked with an attorney before. Regular and kind communication helps our clients feel comfortable trusting us with their family's future.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Compensation: $90-100 per hour
Available Benefits:
- 401(k) matching
- Health insurance (including vision and dental)
- Long-term disability and life insurance
- Paid vacation and holidays
- As a nonprofit organization, NCLS may enable you to qualify for public service loan forgiveness for your federal student loans
Schedule & Working Environment:
This position offers complete schedule flexibility to accommodate personal and other obligations. We maintain open communication regarding availability to ensure we meet client expectations. Work is primarily remote, with office space available as needed for client meetings. In-person meetings with clients are not expected, and doing so is completely up to you.
Equal Opportunity Employer:
"Y'all means everybody." NCLS celebrates diversity in all forms and is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We strongly encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
Application Instructions:
To apply, please email the following to Rich.Gittings@NorthCarolinaLegalServices.org:
- Your resume, including your NC State Bar License Number; and

If you would like to include a cover letter sharing why you believe you would be a great fit for this position, please do so, but it is not a requirement for application.
