Title Tiffin Developmental Center Classroom Aide

Job Summary

Under general direction from the classroom teacher or immediate supervisor performs a variety of academic and behavioral instruction and personal care services that enable the students with disabilities to participate in the educational program. Assist the teacher in organizing instructional materials for the classroom.

Primary Duties

· Checks with the teacher for instructions. Works with small groups and/or individual students. Seeks advice when expectations are unclear

· Helps students with remedial and/or enrichment activities. Reinforces instruction materials introduced by the teacher. Maintains a positive learning environment

· Offers help when students ask or their behavior suggests they need assistance. Avoids being intrusive. Solves student concerns discreetly

· Supports an inclusive educational environment. Helps students with disabilities participate in appropriate peer group activities as directed

· Assists with student mobility needs. Helps students use assisted and/or augmentative devices

· Positions students to take full advantage of each learning environment (e.g., line-of sight, proximity to equipment, height of work surfaces, etc.)

· Assists students with personal hygiene

· Help feed students if needed and use proper adaptive utensils and dishes if required

· Actively participates with students in recreational activities

· Supervise students if they are sleeping

· Renders minor first aid and notifies the building administrator if serious medical attention is needed or questionable

· Monitors ill students when necessary

· Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information

· Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised

· Watches for student behavior that may indicate a problem (e.g., profanity, teasing, bullying, distress, etc.). Intervenes and/or reports concerns immediately

· Maintains high standards and expectations for all students

· Works with the classroom teacher to address persistent behavior problems and implements behavior plans with fidelity and documents student behavior daily as requested by teacher

· Reports student discipline problems, property destruction and other related concerns

· May participate in staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as directed and required trainings

· Performs clerical work related to classroom activities. Prepares and distributes teaching materials. Checks papers and scores tests as directed

· Wears appropriate work attire and maintains and neat appearance

· Demonstrates professionalism and contributes to a positive work environment

· Performs prescribed activities efficiently with limited supervision

· Reacts productively to interruptions and changing conditions

· Effectively uses verbal, nonverbal, writing and listening skills

· Completes paperwork accurately. Verifies and correctly enters data

· Exhibits consistency, resourcefulness and resilience

· Works productively with co-workers and promotes a positive work environment

· Exercises self-control and perseverance when dealing with students

· Cooperates and works well with others

· Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance

· Promotes a favorable image of the NCOESC. Encourages community partnerships that enhance NCOESC programs and services

· Upholds governing board policies and follows administrative procedures

· Reports suspected child abuse and/or neglect to civil authorities as required by law

· Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

· High school diploma

· Valid Ohio Educational Aide Permit with ESEA Qualified Endorsement

· Valid Driver’s License

· Ability to physically manage students with disabilities

· Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position

· The employee shall remain free of alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the ESC

· May require successful completion of communicable disease, child abuse, CPR, first aid, CPI and/or behavioral management training or other training as needed

· Ability to efficiently multi-task on a daily basis

· Proficiency with use of technology hardware and basic software (i.e., Microsoft office), email, and office equipment (i.e., copier, fax, scanner, telephone, etc.). Proficiency with web-based applications

(i.e., Google Docs, DEWs website, social media, etc.), and NCOESC databases

· Ability to preserve confidentiality of student information and records

Clearances Criminal justice fingerprint/background (FBI/BCI), and public health clearances.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

· Performance of duties requires constant standing, walking, balancing, hearing, and eye/foot/hand coordination. Frequent reaching, feeling, talking, and engagement in repetitive motions.

· Occasional sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, handling, and grasping.

· Performance of primary duties takes place in a school environment with frequent exposure to noise and fluctuating temperatures. This job requires occasional exposure to adverse environmental conditions and hazards including temperature extremes, aggressive individuals, and bodily fluids. Constant light physical effort with occasional moderate physical effort required.
