Position Statement:
Under the supervision of the Manager of Health Information Management or designee, codes hospital records using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT-4. Accurately assigns diagnostic and procedural codes to records of patients treated in the outpatient and inpatient setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, DRGs and APCs and is able to maintain a 96% accuracy rate in abstracting/coding.
- Understands Anatomy and Physiology and how it relates to coding. Searches through patient history and physical, operative notes, pathology reports, nurses’ notes and physicians’ orders to determine the appropriate diagnosis and procedure.
- Safeguards and preserves the confidentiality of patient records in accordance with hospital and department policy.
- Identify, research and resolve reimbursement matters related to coding and billing while working closely with Coding, Revenue Cycle Management and Medical Practice team.
- Communicates with insurance payors and management of all levels as needed to get maximum payment resolution on accounts.
- Attends all required in-service sessions/training and departmental meetings.
- Works as a positive team member to streamline and share ideas to improve job performance, work methods and standard procedures.
- Demonstrates a consistent level of performance; maintains a steady level of productivity while maintaining quality standards. Strives to make good use of time; seeks out work that needs to be done; assists others as requested to maintain a steady level of productivity.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Addresses physicians, coworkers and visitors in a pleasant, courteous, and respectful manner while adhering to the North Country Health System Standards of Behavior.
- Consistently demonstrates the ability to be a self-starter.
- High school diploma required.
- Successful completion of a course in Medical Terminology required.
- A minimum of two years previous coding experience required.
- Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology required.
- Accreditation as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, and/or COC is required.
- A positive team player with good computer, technical, and communication skills is required.
