SUD Counselor, Youth Development

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Youth Development Program Manager, the SUD Counselor will provide SUD education and counseling to middle and high school youth in Oceanside, SUD prevention forums / workshops for parents / caregivers and community members, substance abuse screenings, SUD focused Case Management, linkages and referrals. The SUD Counselor will work with youth who could benefit from specialized interventions to target co-occurring substance use symptoms, with the goal of removing these barriers to progress on the mental health impairment.

Required Qualifications

Certified in the state of California as a SUD Counselor, 2 years' experience in substance abuse and / or counseling, co-occurring treatment highly desired. Bilingual (English / Spanish) required. Must possess the ability to make sound decisions independently.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strength-based and culturally sensitive SUD education and counseling services to youth at schools, parents / caregivers and community members at Oceanside Community Resource Centers, and at other community settings
  • Helps clients to identify and connect to activities that would positively impact their social, leadership and coping skills, as well as their physical, mental and emotional health.
  • Screen youth utilizing the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI).
  • Communicates regularly with the Youth Development Case Managers, Clinicians, regarding client SUD treatment
  • Other duties as assigned.

Schedule / Compensation

  • Full-time, non-exempt
  • Monday-Friday (must be available to work 2 evenings until 7 : 30pm may include occasional weekend hours)
  • 28.00 - $30.60 Salary will commensurate with experience and education. Differential pay offered for bilingual skills. EEO.

  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation with a good driving record.
  • Willing to use own, properly insured, reliable vehicle for the job (mileage reimbursed).
  • Employment subject to clearances, including background finger printing checks, driving record, tuberculosis testing, and drug testing.
