The mission of The Way Back is to support men in a residential treatment and recovery center for adult men, in achieving long-term sobriety in a safe, supportive, and structured alcohol/drug-free environment through guidance and education. Our program is designed to pave the way for men to achieve long-term recovery. The SUD Counselor assists men in early recovery regain self-esteem, integrity, and accountability. The Way Back’s SUD Counselor reports directly to the clinical director and program manager. SUD counselors are primarily responsible for facilitating individual and group counseling as well as the supervision of participants involved in treatment and recovery services while at The Way Back. The Way Back provides opportunity for both personal and professional growth.
Responsibilities and Duties:
· Responsible for a case of 5-6 participants.
· Provide support by drawing on your experience and professional skills.
· Provide consultation to the treatment team using a professional perspective.
· Provide direct services to participants including clinical and education groups.
· Participate in peer reviews for participants who are receiving services.
· Develop and maintain effective relationships with clinical and SUD staff.
· Maintain accurate records and prepare reports as requested by the program manager.
· Assist treatment team members and participants in developing independent living skills and promote independence and self-sufficiency.
· Support participants decision making when choosing services or support.
· Perform additional duties as assigned by the program manager, including outreach.
· Participate in and provide up to date documentation of education and training that meet external and internal requirements in public health, including communicable disease, HIV, etc., cultural competency, emergency preparedness, CPR/First Aid.
Minimum Requirements:
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Must be registered or certified by a recognized State of California Alcohol and Drug certifying board. If registered, within two weeks of the hire date, you must be working toward a recognized certification with a State of California Alcohol and Drug Certifying Board.
· Must maintain good standing with your certification board and complete all requirements to remain registered or certified.
· Must complete all required education courses to maintain registration and complete the certification process within five years of your date of registration.
· Must complete all county and state required training within 60 days of hire.
· Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite of programs and have experience with electronic health records (SanWITS training must be completed within 60 days of hire).
· SUD counselors must have the ability to meet the varied treatment and recovery needs in a multi-cultural environment.
· Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.
· Must be free of probation and parole for a minimum of one year.
· Skills include strong communication and writing skills with the ability to maintain up to date records.
· Must be able to lead and work in a team and possess excellent time management and organizational skills.
· Must comply with all agency and contract requirements related to training, public health, certification, reporting, etc. Bilingual proficiency is preferred.
