Position Overview

The Volunteer Engagement Specialist is a key member of the Impact Team, responsible for recruiting, training, and managing volunteers while ensuring seamless program operations. This role is integral in fostering community partnerships, enhancing Lifeline's volunteer experience, and either leading or supporting events and campaigns that bring our mission to life.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Program Management :

  • Recruit, onboard, and train volunteers to support Lifeline's programs and events, ensuring alignment with organizational values.
  • Develop and maintain a robust volunteer database, tracking hours, clearances, and in-kind contributions.
  • Independently develop and implement strategies to retain long-term volunteers, such as mentorship programs or professional development opportunities.
  • Assess risks related to volunteer activities, ensuring compliance with safety policies and liability coverage.
  • Analyze feedback from volunteers and staff to identify and implement improvements in program operations, addressing unique and evolving challenges.
  • Collaborate with the Database Manager to ensure accurate reporting of volunteer hours and compliance with organizational and insurance requirements.
  • Coordinate volunteer assignments, training sessions, and recognition initiatives, including the annual Volunteer Awards, and other events.
  • Build sustainable partnerships with schools, colleges, senior programs, and other community organizations to expand volunteer engagement.
  • Promote equity and inclusivity within the volunteer program by ensuring opportunities are accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Community Engagement and Outreach :

  • Represent Lifeline at community events, promoting volunteer opportunities and cultivating partnerships.
  • Design, plan and implement innovative strategies to increase volunteer recruitment and retention.
  • Design, plan and execute volunteer-driven events, aligning activities with Lifeline's mission and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Fundraising and Communication Support :

  • Collaborate in creating volunteer-focused communications, including monthly newsletters and social media content.
  • Plan and lead donation drives, including logistics, donor engagement, and day-of coordination.
  • Manage the budget for volunteer engagement initiatives, including recognition events, training programs, and recruitment efforts.
  • Work with the impact team to secure funding or grants specifically for volunteer programs.
  • Coordinate and oversee the execution of Lifeline volunteer campaigns, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Partner with the Communications and Engagement Manager to ensure effective volunteer recognition across all platforms.
  • Event Support and Logistics :

  • Provide various forms of support for agency-wide events, including fundraising initiatives, site visits, and community outreach.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth execution of site-specific projects and events.
  • Track and evaluate volunteer program success metrics, continuously identifying opportunities for improvement and growth.
  • What We're Looking For

    Education & Experience :

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in volunteer coordination, community engagement, or related fields required.
  • Skills & Competencies :

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and storytelling.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and CRM systems (Raisers Edge).
  • Highly Preferred :

  • Bilingual English / Spanish preferred (includes a $0.58 / hour differential).
  • Experience with database management.
  • Social media and marketing tools (e.g. CANVA, Adobe Suite).
  • Experience with various data analytical tools.

  • Hybrid schedule : Minimum of 3 days on-site and 2 days remote weekly; schedule may adjust based on organizational needs.
  • Physical requirements include sitting or standing for prolonged periods, occasional lifting (up to 20 pounds), and traveling within San Diego County as needed using a personal vehicle.

    Classification Compliance Statement

    This position is intended to be classified as exempt under the administrative exemption provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and California labor laws. To qualify as exempt, employees must meet both the duties test and the salary test, which requires earning a minimum salary of no less than twice the California minimum wage for full-time employment. The salary range for this position is $62,000 to $72,000, and offers will be made in compliance with applicable laws to ensure the exempt classification is met. If the exemption criteria are not met, the classification of this position may be subject to change to comply with applicable labor laws, and adjustments to compensation, benefits, or job responsibilities may occur as required.
