POSITION TITLE: K-12 Special Education Teacher for 2025-2026 School Year
REPORTS TO: Building Principal

JOB DESCRIPTION:
K-12 Special Education Teacher directs and evaluates the learning experience of assigned students in all activities sponsored by the district. Enables the students to reach their fullest physical, emotional, psychological, behavioral, and educational potential.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain records as required by district policy; maintain professional ethics.
- Essential functions correspond to those of the classroom teacher.
- Provides a basic core program for all students consistent with Michigan Department of Education, Special Education Division code requirements.
- Fulfills the same time schedule as all district teachers as to time of arrival and departure from school.
- Prepares and adheres to a weekly lesson plan for each student that addresses the needs and modifications outlined in the student’s most recent I.E.P.
- Assists the school with placement recommendations and does appropriate testing of all assigned students.
- Makes special efforts to include parent conferences, written reports and progress reports to keep parents informed.
- Is aware of current methods of instruction as they relate to Special Education.
- To be thoroughly aware of the I.E.P. forms and paperwork involved in holding I.E.P. meetings. This is to include: filling out all paperwork in a proper and timely manner; ensuring that all necessary people are invited to the I.E.P.; to ensure that all I.E.P.’s are done on schedule; to schedule and conduct all I.E.P. meetings for assigned students and students entering into the program; and to ensure that all I.E.P. paperwork is completed and given to parents at the conclusion of each I.E.P. meeting.
- To make sure that all end of year testing is done appropriately and on schedule.
- Must support regular education teachers by coordinating student work with them and by maintaining effective communication with them.
- Must provide copies of classroom policies and procedures to the administration.
- Must communicate with the administration regarding classroom discipline measures taken.
- Implement behavior modification techniques as needed in order to promote positive behavior patterns.
- Cooperates with the ISD staff in all facets to meet Special Education requirements to include training programs involving the students.
- Present clear, complete and accurate explanations suitable to levels of learners.
- Give positive reinforcement to acceptable academic and social behavior; provide motivation to students who have a short attention span.
- Keep attendance records and all other records pertinent to the program for state reporting.
- Consistently confront undesirable behavior with firmness and fairness.

- Attend ISD, district and building staff meetings (seminars, conferences, workshops and so forth) as adopted in the district’s calendar unless excused by the principal.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:
- This position works in a variety of settings including classrooms and outdoors and may experience heat or cold extremes as well as fumes, odors, dust; noise level moderate to loud.
