Title:                   Engineering Intern

Reports to:          Director, Power Delivery

Department:        Engineering

 

Purpose: To gain exposure to NGEMC’s electric distribution system design that promotes safety, high levels of reliability, preparation for projected growth, the consistent utilization of new and effective technologies, accurate measurements for analysis and reporting purposes, stewardship of member resources, protective relay devices schematics and system redundancy, and adherence to all electrical code requirements


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Junior or Senior currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, all phases involved in the operation and maintenance of an electrical distribution system.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of substations and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable software programs and systems.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.


Selected interns may receive training and the opportunity to assist with the following engineering functions to the extent practical:

  • Ensure the electrical system operates at an optimum level.
  • Demonstrate effective engineering planning, development, and coordination skills.
  • Ensure the distribution system is designed, constructed, and maintained in accordance with RUS specifications.
  • Ensure economic considerations are based on sound engineering principles.
  • Effectively and efficiently coordinate resources.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of system operation and line feeds.
  • Inspect major construction and a sampling of minor construction for conformance to the overall work plan.
  • Assist in the development of company standards, which are equal to or greater than national, state, local or RUS requirements.
  • Recommend company policies and procedures pertaining to engineering best practices and standards.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation, analysis and submission of key engineering reports to the Vice President of Engineering.
  • Effectively prepare and coordinate the Engineering Department work plan; annually review and evaluate both short- and long-range work plan; assist in the implementation of work plan and construction projects in the service area.
  • Perform system load and coordination studies in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Perform sectionalizing studies; specify relay settings and the location, type and size of sectionalizing equipment.
  • Program, test, and commission relay settings in the shop or field setting
  • Specify phase balancing to reduce losses.
  • Specify the location, size and type of controls for capacitors.
  • Program, test, and commission capacitor banks and control
  • Establish data on engineering records for system studies and analyses.
  • Monitor the system operating conditions in order to make coordinated recommendations for the system.
  • Coordinate system plans with the various departments within the Cooperative.
  • Establishes desired location for placement of fault indicators.
  • Assist with design, configuration, testing, documentation, installation, and maintenance of distribution automation systems.
  • Research, plan, and recommend the implementation of new technologies that sustain or enhance the NGEMC distribution system.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation, analysis and submission of key engineering reports.
  • Write, review, and conduct switching orders.
  • Configure, build, test, document, install and maintain NGEMC Substation RTUs.
  • Conduct and analyze infrared inspections of NGEMC substations and equipment as needed.
  • Assist with monitoring NGEMC system Power Factor.
  • Assist with overseeing and performing construction, testing, maintenance and repair of NGEMC substations.
  • Assist other departments by providing information or working on assigned projects.
  • Direct the restoration of power during outages, as directed.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities (some requirements may exclude individuals who pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of themselves or other employees).  Requires physical ability in reaching, stooping, standing, walking, lifting, must be able to lift small objects with the fingers, grasping, talking, hearing, repetitive operations, and defined sedentary work.  Visual acuity required with administrative machine operation.

 

Working Conditions:

General office environment; requires the flexibility to work irregular hours for assignment completion; requires the ability to work during emergency situations and availability during inclement weather.
