TEMPORARY SUMMER POSITION
The Equine Behavioral Aide plays a vital role in supporting clients participating in therapeutic outdoor programming centered around equine-assisted activities. Working under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional or practitioner, this position helps implement therapeutic exercises tailored to each client’s Individual Behavior Plan (IBP). The goal is to foster a safe, supportive, and growth-oriented environment for clients to develop essential behavioral and emotional regulation skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety-First Operations
- Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all youth, participants, and staff by strictly following North Homes policies, procedures, and utilizing sound judgment.
- Complete all required documentation promptly and accurately, and submit it to the Equine Director or designated staff member.
- Clearly communicate expectations, instructions, responsibilities, and boundaries to clients and support staff.
- Proactively manage client behaviors and group dynamics to create a secure, respectful, and therapeutic atmosphere.
- Support the development and reinforcement of skills identified in the client’s IBP, under the guidance of mental health professionals.
- Celebrate and encourage client accomplishments to build confidence and motivation.
- Monitor client behavior, providing constructive redirection and teaching appropriate coping and communication strategies.
- Intervene appropriately during incidents of dysregulation or negative behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques as outlined by the client’s treatment team.
- Accurately document all behavioral incidents, redirections, and notable interactions.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform other duties as assigned, based on the evolving needs of the agency and at the discretion of the Human Resources Director.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in recreational programming, equine-assisted activities, or residential program operations is preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Valid Minnesota Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record are required.
- Ability to maintain a non-judgmental, respectful, and inclusive approach toward individuals of diverse lifestyles, races, backgrounds, and economic statuses.
- Strong communication skills, reliability, and a commitment to supporting therapeutic goals in a structured outdoor environment.
