ADULT EDUCATION & LITERACY INSTRUCTOR - ESL(PART-TIME)

CATEGORY / LEVEL : Part-time Position

BASIC FUNCTION : Work as a member of the Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) team. Facilitateassessments and teach English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Advocate forstudents, demonstrating sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic,socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds of AEL students, including thosewith physical and learning disabilities.

Classschedules vary by community. The average week includes 6-10 hours ofinstruction and prep time. Currentopenings available in Osage (Tuesdays & Thursdays from 2 : 00-3 : 30 p.m.) andin Britt (one night per week from 5 : 00-8 : 00 p.m.).

STARTDATE : ASAP

SALARY AND BENEFITS : Salaryof $21.65 per hour, not to exceed 29 hours per week. This position is noteligible for benefits.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS : Bachelor's degree required. Excellent computer skills and the ability to work with instructional technology. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Organized, dependable, and excellent communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS : Education-focused degree and teaching experience preferred, as well as experience working with adult or high school students including those with educational and personal barriers.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

  • Learn and keep current with AEL program requirements, goals, and methods.
  • Provide positive student-centered environment committed to ESL student success :

Create enthusiasm for learning and the subject

Encourage student participation and responsibility for learning experiences

Build student pride in self-accomplishment and self-worth

Collaborate with students to determine and plan for their learning goals

Provide timely feedback

  • Utilize the Burlington English curriculum.
  • Conduct effective teaching using a variety of formats, including integrating technology.
  • Conduct orientation each class session for new students.
  • Assess students, document attendance and progress according to AEL requirements.
  • Assist individual students with goal setting, problem solving, and career exploration.
  • Participate in AEL trainings and staff meetings.
  • Refer students to college and community resources.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and collaborating programs.
  • Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Perform in a manner which strengthens the coordination and cooperation of all organizational components of the College, including opportunities for student recruitment.
