Job Title and Description for:

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II

SUMMARY: Operates heavy and light equipment used in District construction, maintenance, and weed control, such as a Dozer, Motor Grader with sloper blade, Backhoe, Loader, Rubber tired Tractor, and/or any rented equipment. Operates dump truck to transport bulk materials, excavate construction sites, and facilitate canal bank repair by smoothing out, leveling, and distributing earth along canals and levees.

This is a skilled general field maintenance position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned, specifically those described in the utility worker description.

  • Fastens attachments to tractor with clevis or wedge pin hitches.
  • Connects hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkage, or power takeoff shaft to tractor to provide power to raise, lower, or tilt attachment.
  • Moves levers to control tool bars.
  • Moves levers and depresses pedals to maneuver tractor and raise, lower, and tilt attachment.
  • Feels lever and listens for stalling action of engine to estimate depth of cut.
  • Drives in successive passes over terrain to raise or lower terrain to specified grade following markings on grade stakes or hand signals
  • Safely and efficiently operate Loader/Backhoe, and rubber tired Tractor
  • Safely and efficiently operate Dozer/Motor Grader and/or any rented equipment
  • Performs routine equipment system maintenance
  • Performs routine weed control and maintenance duties.
  • Is on a rotational 24-hour call for emergency equipment services

  • Wear appropriate safety equipment as required by the job.

  • Contribute ideas or suggestions for safety program improvements.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); at least five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple English sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add and subtract , multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Maintain a California Drivers License, Class A

Will operate District vehicle and or equipment in the daily normal course of business. May also be asked to operate a non-District vehicle to conduct District business.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employees regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.

The District classifies this position to be a “Safety Sensitive” position
