Qualifications:
- Valid Indiana Administrator, Supervisor, Superintendent, or Special Education Certification. (Preferred)
- Master’s degree in education, special education, or a related field.
- Experience in special education, administration, or student services.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state laws governing special education.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
General Description:
The Assistant Director of Special Education provides administrative support to the Executive Director in managing special education programs across the district. This includes ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, supporting staff, collaborating with schools, and assisting in program development to enhance services for students with disabilities.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Assist in identifying, evaluating, and placing students eligible for special education services.
- Support the supervision, training, and evaluation of special education staff, ensuring adherence to district policies and best practices.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and implement policies that ensure compliance with IDEA, Article 7, and other federal/state mandates.
- Monitor IEP processes, ensure compliance, and assist teachers with curriculum modifications and instructional strategies.
- Facilitate professional development opportunities for teachers and support staff to enhance instructional practices and compliance understanding.
- Coordinate with building administrators and general education teachers to promote inclusive practices and interventions for students with disabilities.
- Assist in preparing reports and documentation for the Indiana Department of Education and other regulatory bodies.
- Collaborate with HR on recruiting, selecting, and assigning special education personnel.
- Support the management of special education budgets and federal grant applications.
- Act as a liaison between parents, school staff, and community agencies to ensure services and student support alignment.
- Participate in committee work, district initiatives, and program evaluations to enhance the effectiveness of special education services.
- Handle dispute resolution and assist with mediation when conflicts arise regarding student services.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Superintendent.
Additional Working Conditions:
- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissues in student support situations.
- Interaction with students requiring behavioral or medical intervention.
- Lifting or assisting students with physical disabilities as needed.
- Travel between school buildings and possibly driving in inclement weather.
