JOB TITLE: Head Varsity Football Coach


REPORTS TO: Athletic Director



SUMMARY DESCRIPTION


The primary function of the Head Varsity Football Coach is to manage and oversee the Bedford North Lawrence football program. The head coach will coordinate the high school program (varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen) and also work with the middle school head coach and coaching staff to develop a strong feeder system and create a bridge to the high school program. The head coach will be responsible for the development and training of the players in the football program in the pre-season, during the season, and in the off-season.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES


Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Responsible along with the Athletic Director for all matters relating to the organization, administration, and philosophy of the BNL football program under his/her direction.
  • Work to develop and establish football philosophy in the middle school and youth leagues.
  • Serves in a leadership capacity in the football program.
  • Adheres to the BNL Athletic Coaches Handbook
  • Acts as a positive role model on and off the court/field/site, etc.
  • Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Maintains competency in IHSAA, IFCA, HHC, and NLCS rules, event procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport.
  • Works cooperatively with all IHSAA and HHC coaches, athletic directors, and students to ensure healthy and positive rivalries.
  • Recommends to the Athletic Director teams that may be scheduled.
  • Works closely with the Athletic Director to schedule IHSAA facility use.
  • Secures the Athletic Director’s approval before scheduling non-school facilities for off-campus activities.
  • Works with the coaches and/or Athletic Director to plan transportation and appropriate supervision at away contests in compliance with district travel policy and guidelines.
  • Monitor athlete development (academically and athletically)


Supervisory Duties

  • Assists Athletic Director in recruiting and hiring all coaches.
  • Evaluates all assistant and volunteer coaches in his/her sport.
  • Assigns duties to the coaching staff.
  • Recruit athletes to play football and also encourage athletes to play multiple sports.


Record Keeping Responsibilities

  • Maintains an accurate and current team & program roster and submits copies to the Athletic Office.
  • Works closely with the Athletic Director and Booster Club to finance his/her sport by preparing and submitting an annual budget; follows IHSAA school board policies regarding setting funding criteria and handling financial transactions and sets parameters and supervises fundraising efforts for all teams under his/her direction.
  • Develops a consistent and positive communications procedure through the school and media to inform the parents and the general public about his/her sport.
  • Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
  • Arranges for the presentation of team awards through the Athletic Office.
  • Records, submits, and maintains necessary IHSAA and HHC forms and paperwork.


Athletic Behavior/Eligibility Responsibilities

  • Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  • Ensures that no bullying/hazing occurs in his/her sport.
  • Establishes performance criteria for participation in interscholastic competition in his/her sport.
  • Assist football players that want to play at the next level (eligibility and recruiting)
  • Checks with the Athletic Office on an individual athlete’s eligibility.
  • Enforces all rules of the IHSAA related to his/her sport.


Injury/Safety

  • Oversees the safety condition of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.
  • Cooperates with the Athletic Director to verify that no participant is issued equipment or allowed to practice until his/her physical examination card has been completed and his/her insurance coverage is in effect.
  • Enforces rules and regulations concerning the conditioning of players and their health and safety.
  • Reports injuries to the athletic trainer through personal communication and completing and submitting incident reports to the athletic trainer and Athletic Office.
  • Exercises great care in dealing with all injuries and particularly those that are of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should assure that the injured athlete is receiving competent medical care. Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, the coach should secure the signed approval of the doctor and parent before the athlete is allowed to participate again in athletic activities.
  • Provides supervision of all athletes until they have left the building and/or site.
  • Ensures that all windows, doors, and gates are locked in any area that has been used.


Team Activities

  • Plans all practice sessions and competitions, and supervises out-of-season conditioning program.
  • Ensures a positive environment free of hazing, harassment, bullying, and intimidating language and behaviors.
  • Plans and executes special events such as assemblies, Senior/Parent Night, team meals, awards banquet, other special recognition, etc.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory (uniforms, equipment)
  • Prepare teams to compete on Friday nights and Saturday mornings through lifting, conditioning, scouting, practicing, and analysis of statistical information.
  • Work with the AD for pre-season ordering, in-season needs, and post-season planning.

  • Develop a good working relationship with the school principal and athletic director.

  • Promote BNL Stars football in the school, in the community, and on social media.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS


  • First aid and CPR training preferred.
  • Ability to organize and oversee all aspects of a successful football program.
  • Extensive knowledge of the game of football.
  • Strong organization, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of proper training and conditioning techniques and ability to implement.

  • Ability to adapt offense/defensive schemes as needed based on your football personnel.

  • Ability to relate with and manage a coaching staff and your student-athletes.

  • Previous successful coaching experience. Head coaching experience is not a requirement.

  • Valid teacher or administrator license is preferred, but NOT required.
