Development and Communications Director

Position Summary

The Director of Development and Communications Director, in collaboration with the Executive Director and other members of the Leadership Team, is responsible for securing and maintaining public and private funding through grant proposals and reports and for raising unrestricted revenue from corporations and individuals. The Director also oversees North Side Community School’s recruitment, marketing and communications efforts, including the annual report, websites, monthly newsletters, media relations, social media, and other vehicles. The Director works with and supervises a Development Assistant and Development and Marketing Associate who is responsible for North Side Community School’s marketing graphics and social media presence.

Essential Functions

Fund Development:

  • Develop and implement an annual fund development strategy to raise $750,000 annually for the school
  • Cultivate and steward new and existing donors
  • Prospect identification and research (individual, corporate and foundation donors)
  • Write grants following an annual grant calendar
  • Complete post grant reports
  • Write donor thank you letter templates year-round
  • Manage donor database (DonorPerfect)
  • Maintain profiles on YourCause, Benevity, United way Volunteers, Candid, etc.

Recruitment and Special Events:

  • Develop and lead execution of student and staff recruitment plans
  • Plan and execute annual fundraising gala and additional donor events
  • Plan and execute Young Friends Board fundraiser in conjunction with the group
  • Assist in planning and executing staff events (first week, holiday, end of year)

Management:

  • Maintain general inbox
  • Initial contact for community partners
  • Serve as staff liaison for Young Friends, Development Committee, Gala Committee
  • Supervise Development Assistant and Development and Marketing Associate

Marketing and Graphic Design:

  • Student recruitment plan and execution (digital ads, print ads, brochures, postcard mailings, yard signs, billboards etc.)
  • Routinely collect photos and videos of all campuses
  • Maintain and update school website on an on-going basis
  • Design organizations annual report
  • Lead the design of marketing materials for the school
  • Collect current and former student stories to share on all platforms
  • Maintain profiles on: GreatSchools, Niche, Google Business Profiles, etc.

Communications:

  • Monthly external newsletter
  • Weekly family update
  • Maintain school social pages and post at least three times a week (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube)

Skills & Characteristics

  • At least three years of experience and success raising revenue from foundations, corporations, public entities, and individual donors.
  • Substantial experience in communications and marketing.
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Experience managing grants (applications, reporting, stewardship), with a proven track record of securing grants from corporate and foundation funders.
  • Experience with website, annual report, and email newsletter production and message development.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to write with clarity, accuracy, and speed.
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, including the ability to work with people from different backgrounds.
  • Experience working in a collaborative organization with various internal and external stakeholders, balancing competing demands for time and priorities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office. Familiarity with DonorPerfect, Constant Contact, Canva, and Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) preferred.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter
  • Interest in the quality education of children.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
