POSITION SUMMARY
Student Support Services (SSS) is a TRIO Program funded by the United States Department of Education to improve the persistence, transfer, and graduation rates of first generation and income-eligible college students at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. NEO SSS serves 160 participants each year.
The Academic Specialist is responsible for coordinating and/or conducting tutoring (preferably math, English or science), supplemental instruction, academic workshops and educational planning. The position provides advising to a caseload of participants, collects and analyzes evaluative data and works with faculty to develop materials to improve participants’ study and test taking skills for academic and personal success.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Combine efforts with all SSS staff to implement activities and services to meet the Student Support Services project objectives and help participants meet their individual goals.
· Coordinate the tutoring program; recruit, train, schedule and provide supervision of tutors.
· Develop and implement assessments and use them to evaluate student progress in tutoring areas; evaluate the tutoring component.
· Ability to work directly with college faculty to help participants gain skills needed for academic and personal success.
· Design and instruct supplemental classes and/or strategies for SSS participants; recommend instructional materials, including software, appropriate to participant need.
· Prepare performance and attendance reports for participants utilizing services through SSS; track student progress and follow up with personal contacts to discuss possible solutions.
· Provide academic advisement, career information, financial aid information/assistance and guidance activities, educational/degree planning, course selection, and related support services for the programs offered by the college.
· Collect data for analysis and measurement of effectiveness of academic programs.
· Enter participant contacts in a computer database program on a daily/weekly basis.
· Maintain confidentiality of participant records.
· Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the position.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
· A Master’s degree in administration, education, counseling or related field preferred, bachelor’s degree required.
· At least two years’ instructional experience required, community college experience preferred;
· At least one year of experience working in an SSS or other TRIO project preferred. Preference to individuals who have backgrounds similar to the target population;
· Two years’ experience supervising staff preferred;

· Demonstrated planning skills;
· Knowledge of best practices for higher education instruction;
· Excellent oral and written communication skills;
· Organizational skills;
· Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
· Previous experience in the use of technology for instructional purposes;
· Demonstrated sensitivity to needs of economically/educationally disadvantaged or at-risk students;
· Knowledge of the community college philosophy and NEO’s graduation requirements, academic programs and advising policy and procedures preferred
