About the Opportunity JOB SUMMARY: The Learning Design Manager leads a team that manages complex, innovative learning design projects. Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Learning, the Learning Design Manager implements processes in design to ensure the Learning Design team is on the cutting edge of best practices in online course and learning experience development. Providing leadership in the area of learning experience design, the Learning Design Manager will oversee content creation, including learning design, assessment development, and multimedia using a variety of virtual learning environments. Other responsibilities will include supporting QA and providing support to the Director of Enterprise Learning during the prototyping stage. The Learning Design Manager will also work towards achieving institutional initiatives, EDGE strategic initiatives and projects, and the regular creation of online programs with the multiple colleges at the University and enterprise partners and clients. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of instructional design principles, learning theory, and educational technologies in the design and development of learning experiences. Proficient in the use of eLearning tools and technologies. Ability to: collaborate with digital media team and summon specialists as needed (accessibility, simulation, games, etc.); take on new design projects with little oversight; identify needed updates, changes, upgrades as necessary to ensure the design process is on the cutting edge of best practices; to research and synthesize information quickly; effectively manage projects that involve diverse individuals who may be local or at a distance. Other skills and characteristics required include: collaboration; verbal, written and interpersonal; attention to detail; leadership abilities in training, mentoring and coaching; Flexible, independent and willing to pitch-in where needed; and comfort with adjusting work to evolving priorities in a dynamic work environment. Knowledge and skills required are typically acquired through a master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Psychology or a related field and/or demonstrated equivalent work experience plus a least 5 years of experience. Experience should include: a track record of innovation; 3 years of management experience, preferably with distributed team; working with production groups to build learning assets or curriculum, experience working with a variety of media and web developers; using one or more learning management systems as well as common software used in the design and development of learning experiences; managing projects and external vendors. Experience in higher education and/or in enterprise using the design thinking process is a plus. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1) Team Management Manage learning design staff, including Senior and Junior Learning Experience Designers and Content Development Specialists. 2) Resource, Relationship, and Project Management Manage the scoping, design, and development of learning design projects. Pull together the skills, talent and resources needed to execute projects successfully. Manage deadlines, manage risk, manage external vendors and consultants and monitor and escalate issues that may impact product quality and timeline up to the Director of Enterprise Learning as needed. Manage and oversee quality of design, including the media team engaged on the project. Engage in faculty meetings with designers as needed. 3) Professional Development and Training Support the Executive Director of Enterprise and Digital Learning and Director of Enterprise Learning’s efforts in training, development, and coaching of learning designers as needed. For example, he/she will identify designers in need of additional support and help develop coaching plans for them. 4) Learning Design and Production Ensure consistent policy, process, tools and design procedures are followed by design teams and oversee content production, including media. Implement best practices in innovative learning design across all projects. Contribute as a learning designer on projects, particularly during the prototyping stage.
