- This position is posted as General Commercial Kitchen Service Technician, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Commercial Kitchen Service Technician, Intermediate.
- Maintenance personnel participate in a mandatory weekly on-call rotation to minimize downtime for campus dining facilities and requires the ability to work some evenings and weekends.
- This position will require some work to be performed in hot and cold environments, such as replacing a belt on the roof or replacing a fan in a walk-in freezer.
- This position primarily works in commercial kitchen environments and related food service areas.
- This position assists with snow removal as required for Campus Dining loading docks and other Campus Services areas of responsibility.
The NAU Dining Maintenance team is a part of the Campus Services and Activities department and supports over 30 dining locations on the NAU campus as well as the High-Country Conference Center. This position reports to the Commercial Kitchen Maintenance Supervisor and will perform work primarily in areas used by the NAU Campus Dining program, the High Country Conference Center, and other areas of campus for special events as needed.
Repairs, Replaces, & Installs Equipment – 60%
- Performs routine field repairs and replacement of commercial kitchen equipment that may connect to multiple utility types, including gas, electric, domestic water and waste, and steam systems.
- Assist in the installation of commercial kitchen equipment that may connect to multiple utility types, including gas, electric, domestic water and waste, and steam systems
- Tests equipment to ensure proper performance and functioning both in the field and in a shop environment
- Diagnoses routine mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues with food service equipment, including low voltage control circuits, and assists with determining the best course of action for repair or replacement.
- Performs routine maintenance and repair of refrigeration systems, including commercial refrigerators, freezers, walk-in coolers, and ice makers
- Assists in the installation of refrigeration systems, including commercial refrigerators, freezers, walk-in coolers, and ice makers.
- Fields, prioritizes, and performs service support requests from an on-line work order system and in-person inspections
- Maintains accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent on each job.
- Assists in developing training materials for food and beverage vendors on the proper use of food service equipment, as needed.
- Participates in on-call assignments and weekend maintenance rotations as assigned.
Equipment Preventative Maintenance – 20%
- Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure equipment is in good working condition and meets safety standards.
Special Event Support – 10%
- Provides food service equipment set-up including but not limited to temporary electricity, water, cooking gas, lighting, refrigeration, mobile food service units, and sanitation stations as requested by Campus Services operations staff at various indoor and outdoor locations across campus.
Shop Safety -5%
- Maintain manufacturer repair certifications, county health code awareness, and certification in appropriate OSHA standards.
- Maintain inventory and proper maintenance of tools and instrumentation including proper disposal of unusable paints, sealants, or caulking.
- Immediately correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any non-correctable conditions to supervisor immediately.
Other – 5%
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a refrigeration technician program or vocational training.
- 2 years relevant experience commercial kitchen equipment maintenance and repair field.
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- EPA section 608 refrigeration technician certification or equivalent.
- Must be able to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of commercial food service equipment operation and maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of refrigeration systems, components, and controls.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and guidelines when working with refrigerants and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of generally accepted health code requirements as related to site conditions and equipment in kitchens and serving areas (Coconino County preferred).

Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary range begins at $51,085. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
