What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Monitor position at Northern Illinois Food?
Summary/Objective
Northern Illinois Food Bank is seeking seven Child Nutrition Programs Summer Specialists to provide support for the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program. This position will:
- Provide on-site assistance in the day-to-day operations of the Family Fresh Mart program.
- Serve as an advocate for the nutritional needs of children at-risk of hunger.
- Monitor for compliance with all regulations and requirements of NIFB, USDA, ISBE, and Feeding America.
- Provide training and technical assistance to new and existing partner nutritional sites.
Essential Functions
- Visit partner sites during food distribution and service operations to ensure their compliance with program regulations and complete required visit documentation.
- Support Family Fresh Mart produce distributions by staffing distributions and reworking the produce.
- Communicate findings of site visits to the Program Manager and if directed, discuss the findings from a site visit with the site director and conduct follow-up site visits.
- Maintain accurate program files, site records, and visit documentation.
- Conduct outreach activities to identify and develop potential new sites to partner with Northern Illinois Food Bank.
- Conduct on-site training and technical assistance sessions for partner site staff.
- Assist with data entry as it relates to daily meal count information, invoicing, and site information.
- Engender a positive relationship with all community and agency partners to ensure maximum utilization and involvement of NIFB.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience
- Detail oriented.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-starter and ability to work independently.
- Commitment to understanding and supporting NIFB’s mission; Shows compassion and an appreciation for hunger issues.
- Familiarity with federal child nutrition programs is beneficial.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
Work Environment
This job operates approximately 5% in a professional office environment, with the majority of the time spent in the field monitoring or on-site distributing produce. This role will require staff to be outside for an extended duration of time.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to frequently communicate with site staff, children, and internal and external customers over the phone, through email, and in person. They should be able to move inside and outside on uneven surfaces, and climb and descend stairs. This would require the ability to move files and supplies to and from program site and training sites, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand on a stool or ladder as necessary. Staff may be required to lift boxes with food, or coolers.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a 75% part-time position. Days and hours of work are between Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is approximately 30-35 hours per week. There may be a few instances that the employee starts before 8:00 a.m. but these instances would be rare and communicated well in advance. No weekends.
Position Location
This position is based out of our West Suburban Center (Geneva) location.
Travel
Local travel up to 95% of the time is required.
