Department: Quality Management

Position is located: Northern Light Home Care and Hospice Bangor

Work Type: Part Time Eligible

FTE: 0.6 (24 hours)

Work Schedule: 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM

This role can be performed remotely anywhere in the United States with the exception of California

Summary:

The Medical Coder is responsible for exercising judgment in analyzing clinical documentation and accurately establishing diagnoses codes in order to maximize reimbursement. The Medical Coder communicates clinician diagnoses recommendations to the clinician and clinical managers. The Medical Coder participates in performance improvement initiatives. Performance reflects the mission and values of Home Care & Hospice.

Responsibilities:

1. Coding Review- Exercise judgment in analyzing clinical documentation, to accurately establish diagnoses coding while maximizing appropriate reimbursement for the organization. • Reviews documentation and accurately applies diagnoses codes. • Problem solves and troubleshoots documentation for: coding discrepancies, logical inconsistencies, errors, and completeness. • Collaborates with clinicians and billing staff to resolve diagnosis coding issues. • Makes corrections in electronic medical record as needed. • Serves as a resource to agency staff and management in regard to the coding of client diagnoses. • Maintains knowledge of OASIS, coding, and clinical practice standards by accessing various media (i.e. newsletters and websites) to ensure current knowledge of procedures/national standards. 2. Performs additional duties as required or assigned.

Education

  • Required High School Diploma/General Educational Development (GED)
    • A minimum of two years of coding experience or home health administrative experience. Current HCS-D or equivalent certification and/or ability to obtain HCS-D certification within 6 months of hire date. Demonstrates current knowledge of diagnostic coding and home health & hospice coding guidelines.
