Summary :
The new hire Graduate Nurse (GN), must be a successful graduate of an accredited school of nursing and eligible to take the NCLEX exam for the first time NCLEX; national licensing exam for registered nurses Authorization to Test- after a board of nursing declares a graduate eligible, they send an authorization to test email to the graduate which enables them to schedule an NCLEX test date. It is expected that the Authorization to Test document will be provided to the hospital prior to hire. The Graduate Orientee will work under the supervision of a registered nurse until licensure has been verified by the Human Resources Department. The registered nurse preceptor is responsible for instructing and supervising the Graduate Orientee within the scope of practice as outlined above. The registered nurse preceptor will be selected by the Nurse Manager as someone who displays a high level of clinical knowledge and performance. The registered nurse preceptor will have attended the the hospital's Preceptor Program.
Responsibilities :
- The Graduate Orientee will engage in an intensive orientation program under the supervision of a registered nurse educator or preceptor that involves learning skills specific to the role of the nurse.
- The Graduate Orientee shall :
- Shall be listed on the Maine CNA Registry
- Schedule an exam date that falls within the first 45 days of employment.
- Disclose the test date to the Human Resources Department as well as the Nurse Manager.
- Provide the results of the NCLEX exam to the Human Resources Department as well as the Nurse Manager within one business day of receiving them.
- The Graduate Orientee shall :
- Attend all general orientation classes as determined by Northern Light Health Education Services.
- Perform approved tasks as under the supervision of a registered nurse preceptor.
- Abstain from performing any task that requires professional licensure, including but not limited to, administration of medications, admission assessments and discharge of patients.
- Complete all required Health Stream modules within the first 30 days of hire and will review nursing policies and IDDs during nursing orientation.
- The Graduate Orientee will work under the supervision of a registered nurse until licensure has been verified by the Human Resources Department. The registered nurse preceptor is responsible for instructing and supervising the Graduate Orientee within the scope of practice as outlined above. The registered nurse preceptor will be selected by the Nurse Manager as someone who displays a high level of clinical knowledge and performance. The registered nurse preceptor will have attended the A.R Gould Hospital Preceptor Program.
- The Graduate Orientee may not work as a Registered Nurse until the A.R Gould Hospital Human Resources Department has verified licensure. This will take place on the first business day after test results are available.
- After licensure has been verified, the Graduate Orientee will assume the job description of an entry-level RN.
- A Graduate Orientee who does not pass the NCLEX examination may fill an open certified nursing position at the CNA rate of pay until they are able to pass the exam.
- All individuals will receive the same Graduate Nurse Salary rate based upon full-time employment, 36 hours per week, with shift differentials.
- Immediately upon passing the NCLEX the title will change to Registered Nurse (RN) with full entitlement of compensation including shift differentials. Admit patients according to established guidelines.
- Assess patients physical and psychosocial needs and implement a plan of care to address the needs.
- Transcribe / implement physician orders in a timely and efficient manner.
- Assess patient / significant other education needs and provide instruction as appropriate.
- Participate in department quality improvement activities.
- Comply with mandated hospital and department education programs.
- Accept responsibility for professional growth and development.
- Support Risk Management and Infection Control programs.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the philosophy and objectives of the A.R Gould Hospital organization.
