Title: Adult Basic Education Instructor-Mathematics
Department/Program: Education: ABE/Mathematics
Work Location: 1 NNLC 1400 Wedekind Rd., Reno, NV 89512 or Outreach Location
Hours: 9:00 am to 11:30 am and/or 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday
(additional hours may be assigned for workshops and meetings)
Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt- Hourly Employee
The instructors at Northern Nevada Literacy Council are a valuable and significant part of the Adult Basic Education programs offered by the organization. Instructors supervise and manage students in the classroom. Instructors serve as student mentors and emulate the professionalism and skills students needed to complete courses, achieve their high school equivalency certification, further their careers and/or enter the workforce. Under the direct supervision and mentoring of the Academic Director, instructors are charged with the delivery of instruction to ensure all students reach the learning outcomes of each Adult Basic Education program. The following is a list of responsibilities of the instructor. Additional duties may be assigned by the Executive Director, Director of Operations, or Academic Director as needed.
Instructional Delivery, Curriculum Development, and Classroom Environment
- Provide instruction to students enrolled in the site’s Adult Education Program: High School Equivalency Preparation, English Language Acquisition, Integrated Education and Training, and/or Citizenship Preparation.
- Demonstrate accurate and current knowledge of subject matter.
- Ensure all students enrolled receive the course approved standardized syllabus.
- Develop a clear lesson plan with activities appropriate to class and level of students.
- Submit all lesson plans to the shared file for Instructors, so substitutes and Academic Director can access as needed.
- Present learning objectives and goals in the classroom setting daily.
- Provide a learning environment where students feel welcome, valued, and respected.
- Promote and encourage active student participation.
- Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods that help students make learning gains.
- Use appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet learning needs of all students.
- Maintain and encourage active student participation for students connecting to class remotely.
- Develop and use assessment strategies (traditional/alternative) to assist in development of learners.
- Use multiple assessment methods, including CASAS, to guide instruction.
Student Services and Support
- Refer students to Student Services office to be connected with resources in the community.
- Provide feedback to students about their progress with a focus on improving performance.
- Implement Northern Nevada Literacy Council student retention policies.
- Employ techniques to improve attendance and maintain interest level of students (phone calls, sending out post cards, messaging on Remind, etc.).
- Encourage students to pursue further learning opportunities such as the Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs.
- Direct students to Student Services for enrollment in workforce development programs and for post-secondary transition.
- Assist with scheduling students due for post assessment by referring them to Front Desk Intake Specialists and remind students of their requirement to assess.
Administrative Tasks
- Ensure attendance is recorded accurately and daily using class roster and online tracker.
- Properly document all advising, academic concerns, and attendance concerns in Student Database System-LACES.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and other professional information.
- Provide Student Services office with feedback about student performance as needed.
- Maintain all instructional materials and supplies used to teach coursework and notify Front Desk Intake Specialists or Academic Director of needed replacements.
- Communicate effectively with program administrators and colleagues regarding expectations and programmatic updates.
Professional Development and Professional Responsibilities
- Attend weekly NNLC staff meetings when possible.
- Engage in approved continuing education and professional development opportunities.
- Consistently maintain regular punctual attendance for class instruction.
- Maintain proper care and safe use of NNLC equipment and property.
- Interact in a positive manner with students, teachers, administrative staff, and community.
- Demonstrate an enthusiasm for the subject material that will foster a positive learning environment for students.
Professional Dress
To model workforce development while on campus, instructors are expected to follow the dress code as described in the NNLC Employee Handbook. Business casual attire should be followed at all times.
