What are the responsibilities and job description for the 3D Fine Arts Instructional Assistant position at Northern VA Community College?
This position will be responsible for providing operational support for the ceramics and sculpture laboratories. This position will be responsible for delivering instructional training, technical and pedagogical support in ceramics and sculpture. Assists in the preparation of instruction materials for class and when applicable provide administrative and program organization support. This position provides technical assistance to the Alexandria 3D Fine Arts Laboratories and supports 3D Fine Arts faculty. The position also assists laboratory functionality and health and safety standards for the 3D laboratories and the adjoining outside workspaces.
Duties and tasks:
- Create a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for the students by assisting art faculty and organizing volunteers and work-study students to keep the laboratories clean, organized and safe.
- Set up, prepare and maintain all art laboratory equipment to be used on a regular basis.
- Organize student storage space and the storing of artwork in the appropriate areas.
- Learn and follow safety and emergency preparedness procedures for the art laboratories.
- Maintain a schedule of open laboratory times with adequate coverage to allow students to complete projects outside of assigned class time.
- Ensure all students complete technical activities that affect the laboratory functionality correctly, including glaze mixing and kiln loading.
- Monitor the safe use of equipment by students, including reinforcing basic safety measures to be used when working with various glazes, kilns, potter’s wheels and other ceramic tools.
- Ensure all equipment is being properly used and maintained by students and assigned laboratory areas are maintained and clean. Recycle clay in the pug mill and load and fire kilns as needed to maintain a steady flow of student progress.

- Knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.
- Knowledge of ceramics processes including use of wheels, kilns, glaze mixing and all ceramics-related materials and tools.
- Knowledge of the function of various sculpture tools used to work in clay, plaster, metal fabrication, wood fabrication, and wax and bronze casting.
- Knowledge and ability to operate and assist with electric and gas kilns.
- Knowledge and ability to work with electric and hand tools, wood shop tools, oxyacetylene welding and arc cutting tools.
- Knowledge of clay, glazes and slip. (i.e., how to mix clay bodies and compound glazes, and test new clays and glazes)
- Knowledge of computer-controlled electric kilns, gas kilns and Raku firing processes
- Knowledge of laboratory safety rules and procedures to OSHA standards (i.e., provide respirators, gloves, goggles; ensure adequate ventilation of toxic fumes, particulates, and mists, etc.)
- Knowledge of inventory processes
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and instructors with various needs
- Ability to demonstrate and monitor the safe use of all laboratory equipment.
- Must also be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (weight of a commercial box of wet clay or bag of dry clay powder for mixing).
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time on a concrete floor.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience with ceramics and sculpture laboratory equipment, processes and function
- Experience in operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Experience and familiarity with basic software programs, including Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with assisting in a lab and/or experience working in the field
- Customer service experience
- Managing a ceramics and sculpture laboratory
- 3D Fine Arts Laboratory Technician Experience
- Experience in event management
- Administrative experience
