What are the responsibilities and job description for the 9-month Teaching Faculty (Horticulture) position at Northern VA Community College?
Duties and Tasks: Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month teaching faculty positions carry a normal teaching load of 12-15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.
Essential Functions: NOVA faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports in a timely manner; teach the courses using established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations; answer emails in a responsible fashion; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.
Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to coordinate and solicit the use of outside resources, people and organizations for instruction and program development. •Ability to review and propose program changes and development, develop community and professional outreach.
- Ability to develop and teach field and hands-on based courses, online and hybrid courses and hands-on lab activities.
- Knowledge of technologies used in greenhouse operation.
- Ability to use instructional technologies. •Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in the teaching field preferred or associate’s degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competencies. Qualifying academic degrees must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
- A minimum of two years of full-time occupational experience related to the teaching field. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent.
- The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations.
- Master’s Degree in Horticulture or appropriate qualifying field related to the teaching field with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field. Qualifying degree and coursework must have been awarded by /completed with a regionally accredited institution.
- Significant professional experience (minimum 5 years of FT or FT equivalent) related to the teaching area. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent.
- Two years college-level teaching experience (FT or FT equivalent). Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent.
