This position is designed for new RN graduates or RNs with less than one year of OB experience, or no OB experience. The role offers hands-on OB training during the first year, with 8- or 12-hour shifts. After 18 months, if the RN successfully meets all standards, they will transition to casual call status. RN Training Program staff are encouraged to apply for open full-time positions when available. As a casual call employee, the RN is required to work two shifts per department schedule (8 or 12 hours), with one shift falling on a weekend (according to the 4- or 6-week cycle). Additionally, one extra shift per quarter must be picked up, as needed, to cover department needs such as sick calls, uncovered shifts, or to assist with high census.
 
Job Summary
Provides direct professional nursing care for maternal and newborn patients by utilizing nursing knowledge and critical thinking skills. Performs technical nursing functions, utilizes the nursing process to assess patient status, develop, implement, and evaluate patient care. Ensures a therapeutic and safe environment for patients and families within the guidelines and policies of the department and the philosophy of the organization. This position provides age-specific and developmentally appropriate care for neonate, adolescent, and adult patients.
 
Compensation
We are committed to providing wage ranges for all open positions. Please note that the specific compensation for this role will be determined based on FTE, market analysis, and internal equity considerations. The flat rate hourly amount for this position is: $40.25. This amount reflects the base salary for this position.
 
Key Accountabilities:
  • Patient assessment
    1. Assesses patient’s condition based upon observation, examination, and / or interview, laboratory findings, and other pertinent information
    2. Completes assessment in specified time frame.
    3. Identifies and consistently recognizes changes in normal and abnormal parameters in the patient’s physiological and psychological condition.
  • Patient care planning
    1. Uses professional judgement and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize and execute the patient’s plan of care consistent with patient assessment data and physician’s treatment plans and professional standards of evidence based practice.
    2. Directs and delegates support personnel in implementing patient’s plan of care, provides supervision and guidance.
  • Patient interventions
    1. Implements nursing interventions to achieve progress toward expected patient outcomes or to stabilize a patient’s condition and / or prevent complications.
    2. Consistently follows patient care and facility policy and procedures in performance of one’s duties.
    3. Renders professional nursing care including administering medications, starting intravenous fluids and blood products.
    4. Performs all technical skills required for unit patient population such as, but not limited to IV venipuncture, restraint application, sterile dressings, etc.
  • Evaluation of care
    1. Evaluates and documents patient’s response to nursing care and modifies or revises treatment plans, and / or contacts physicians as circumstances require.
    2. Documentation reflects evaluation of patient response to nursing actions.
  • Provides patient education
    1. Provides and documents patient / family education based on diagnosis, treatment plan or prescribed medical regimen in accordance with patient / family readiness and ability to learn.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
For Labor/Delivery RNs:
  • Current RN license with the Minnesota Board of Nursing, in good standing
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification for Health Care Providers (if not current will need to obtain in the first 6 months).
  • Current NRP certification (if not current will need to obtain in the first 6 months).
  • Current STABLE certification (if not current will need to obtain in the first 6 months).
  • Current ACLS certification (if not current will need to obtain in the first 6 months).
  • Basic Electronic Fetal Monitoring (if not current will need to obtain in the first 6 months).
For Post-Partum RNs:
  • Current RN license with the Minnesota Board of Nursing, in good standing
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification for Health Care Providers (if not current will need to obtain in the first 6 months).
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2-5 years of Labor/Delivery experience
Schedule:
  • 60hrs/2wks
  • 7:00am-7:30pm/7:00pm-7:30am
  • Two out of six weekends
  • Two of six holidays, but never two in a row
