Job Summary

A Disabilities Coordinator develops and implements support plans for individuals with disabilities, coordinates services with various agencies, conducts needs assessments, advocates for clients, facilitates access to community resources, and raises awareness about disability issues.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Intervening in the prevention of child abuse and neglect, as mandated by Federal and State law.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of family records and information.
  • Encouraging and promoting the family’s achievement of self-sufficiency.
  • Participating in all appropriate trainings and meetings.
  • Recruiting and supervising any volunteers, student teachers, or interns (in the special needs field) and providing the necessary training, support, and feedback necessary for their professional growth.
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Coordinating Service Delivery to Special Needs Families :

  • Transitioning diagnosed children into Early Head Start / Head Start from home, Early Head Start or Early Intervention.
  • Coordinating developmental screening with Health and / or Education managers.
  • Developing a disabilities service plan providing strategies for meeting the special needs of children with disabilities and their parents in accordance with Head Start principles.
  • Meeting with parents to discuss children’s needs.
  • Assisting staff in implementing the disabilities service plan.
  • Coordinating with the Northside Center for Child Development’s other early childhood programs to ensure the continuation of services the children and families are receiving.
  • Coordinating the annual updating of the disabilities service plan.
  • Coordinating training efforts for staff and parents regarding children with disabilities.
  • Maintaining records of families involved in the process.
  • Attending EHS / HS Meetings :

  • Coordinating Head Start IEP meetings.
  • Attending IFSP / IEP meetings with families and EI representatives.
  • Attending educational and social services meetings.
  • Participating in Health Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Representing EHS / HS in the Educational Community :

  • Serving as the contact person for disabilities trainings, and conferences.
  • Attending Quality Improvement Center for Disabilities (QIC-D) conferences and workshops.
  • Participating in other relevant workshops.
  • Qualifications :

  • A bachelor's degree preferred in Education or relevant field, specializing in Early Childhood / Elementary Education.
  • Experience working with families and children aged newborn to five.
  • College courses in working with children and families with special needs.
  • Knowledge of early intervention resources in the community.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, receive and provide feedback, and manage dynamic interchanges in meetings.
  • An understanding of the Head Start philosophy and ability to implement its principles of shared authority and decision-making.
