Hydrologist I
Job Location: Headquarters - Midway, FL Located 10 miles west of Tallahassee on Hwy. 90
Minimum Qualifications:
Level IV: One year of education successfully completed above the high school level that includes coursework in subjects such as physical science, mathematics, biology, surveying, or chemistry and ten years of experience in water quality sampling and hydrologic data collection.
Level III: One year of education successfully completed above the high school level that includes coursework in subjects such as physical science, mathematics, biology, surveying, or chemistry and six years of experience in water quality sampling and hydrologic data collection.
Level II: One year of education successfully completed above the high school level that includes coursework in subjects such as physical science, mathematics, biology, surveying, or chemistry and four years of relevant experience.
Level I: One year of education successfully completed above the high school level that includes coursework in subjects such as physical science, mathematics, biology, surveying, or chemistry.
Levels II through IV: A Bachelor’s Degree in the natural sciences or similar field can substitute for two years of experience; an Associate’s Degree can substitute for one year of experience.
Special Abilities:
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to interact effectively with other staff and the general public.
- Ability to swim and ability to operate and trailer an outboard motorboat.
- General knowledge of Florida's springs, rivers, and aquifer systems and water quality.
- Proficiency with personal computers, Microsoft Office, and databases.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, mechanical skills, and ability to troubleshoot field equipment.
- Ability to understand various units of measurement and perform mathematical calculations.
- Experience w/ hand tools, w/ ability to build and repair platforms, shelters & other simple structures.
- Ability to routinely lift & carry materials & equipment up to 50 lbs to remote sites inaccessible by vehicle.
- Experience with standard operating procedures and equipment used for data collection.
- Ability to perform strenuous work in a wide range of temperatures including above 95° F and below 35° F; work includes but not limited to; manual earth moving, brush clearing, and station construction.
Description:
This is a full-time field position involving the collection of rainfall, surface water and aquifer levels, and water quality data to fulfill the District’s mission of protecting and managing the water resources of northwest Florida. This position involves working outdoors year-round to manage monitoring sites located at springs, rivers, pine flatwoods, and other natural environments as well as urban areas. This outdoor work is performed across a wide range of temperatures including inclement and rainy weather, and often involves dealing with biting insects, thorny vegetation, wildlife such as snakes and alligators, and other environmental conditions.
Levels I through IV
- Install, maintain, and repair data station structures and installations.
- Install, set up, program, maintain, and operate data loggers, sensors, and other types of hydrologic, water quality, and meteorological monitoring equipment.
- Operate and maintain District vehicles and boats, including scheduled services and safety checks.
- Collect, compile and record hydrologic, water quality, biologic and meteorological data following standard operating procedures and ensuring proper quality assurance and quality control.
- Enter data into databases utilizing multiple user interfaces, perform basic mathematical calculations and other data quality assurance procedures.
- * Maintain field and laboratory supplies.
- Promotes teamwork across Divisions, Bureaus and Programs and provides superior customer service to the citizens of Florida.
- Other duties as assigned.
Levels III and IV – Additional Responsibilities
- Assist Program Manager with scheduling, and coordinating monitoring activities and ordering supplies.
- Perform wading and boat-based discharge measurements on drainage systems, streams and rivers.
Manage data collection projects, review and summarize data and prepare written reports
Provide technical assistance and training for Level I and Level II staff.
